THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1939 TECHNICIAN By NOBRIS EOYDEN Last season Benjamin A. Jones, one of the countrys better trainers, developed a growthy son of Insco into a Flamingo Stakes and Kentucky Derby winner after that colt had shown himself to be only a fair sort as a two-year-old. That colt was Lawrin, which later went amiss upon winning the Hollywood Park Invitational, and has supplanted the ill-fated Insco in the stud at the Woolford Farm in Kansas of his owner, Herbert M. Woolf. Jones is attempting to make history repeat itself with Technician, another son of Insco, and so far he has gotten the colt by the Flamingo Stakes safely. The Kentucky Derby is next, and the big bay colt from the Sir Martin mare, Glister, is accounted one of the favorites for that classic. He deserves his standing, not only for the Derby but for his later engagements as well. Technician, probably a slightly better two-year-old than was Lawrin, has yet to prove that he has developed as well as his stablemate, but as far as he has come this season his connections are thoroughly satisfied. He only needs to improve in his spring training as well as Lawrin to be a very tough horse to beat in the Derby. In his winter debut at Hialeah Park Technician ran seven furlongs in 1:23 to win an allowance affair by four lengths, and then in the Bahama Handicap over the same route he was a steadily-closing second to Royal Pam, losing by a neck in 1:23. His next outing was an allowance affair over the Flamingo route of a mile and one furlong, which he won easily by slightly more than a length over Silent Witness. In the Miami Jockey Clubs three-year-old special, the Woolf colt was rated along smoothly as Volitant set the pace and, moving to the latter steadily entering the stretch, outgamed him in a long drive to score by a neck. Volitant was a worthy opponent, as his record shows, as he never has finished worse than second, holding El Chico to a length in the Junior Champion and losing the Walden by only a head to Inscoelda, Technicians stablemate and a powerful claimant of juvenile filly honors. Lawrin might not have beaten as good a col in either Bourbon King or Pasteurized. Technicians time of 1:50 was three-fifths faster than the mark made by Lawrin. As a juvenile Technician was kept busy, but all the time in fourteen starts he probably had not come to himself as he seems to have done during the winter. He ran three times in Hialeahs baby races a year ago, then started at Churchill Downs, Lincoln Fields and twice at Arlington Park before being ready to graduate. He captured both of his next two efforts easily, the second one in mud, and was pronounced ready for the Arlington Futurity. However, he was unable to enter contention. After placing in an overnight event at Washington Park, Technician moved to Belmont Park, where he was a close second to Olney, and then beaten two lengths by Benefactor, although beating Impound before starting in the Futurity. His performance in the classic was pleasing enough for a colt whose best was still in him. He finished sixth in the field of eleven and was eased out of training until his Florida campaign. Technician is considered by most of the breeding experts to possess a better blood on the distaff side than Lawrin, but neither dam may be said to have been bred in the purple. Glister, by Sir Martin and dam of Technician, was a good race mare, however, her victories including the stake at Bowie now termed the Bryan and OHara Handicap and worth at that time more than 1,000 to the winner. Bright Gold, the second dam by Golden Maxim, was a sister to Pegasus. As for Insco, sire of Technician, he appeared well on his way to gaining the distinction of being the best of Teddys numerous successful sons and grandsons standing in the United States when he died suddenly two months ago. His breeding was as good as can be found in the stud book, as he was by Sir Gallahad III. from the sister to North Star TTT f Ajax Flying Fox tj f Teddy Amie L Rondeau - Bay Ronald m -i .1 Doremi js I , f Spearmint I Carbine t. : LPIucky Liege......
