STRIKE TIES UP TANKERS NEW YORK, N. Y., April 18. Approximately thirty-oil tankers were estimated to be tied up yesterday in a walkout which resulted from the collapse of negotiations over a new contract between the National Maritime Union CIO and five of the nations leading oil transportation companies. Union leaders threatened to spread the strike to 184 vessels along the coast and eventually involve 5,000 men. Some of the tankers are at sea and will not reach port for several days. Union demands for preferential hiring rather than wage dispute precipitated the walk-out. The union sought to designate the men to be placed on various ships and the companies refused. Unlicensed seamen sought wage boosts ranging from to 0 a month, which in most cases the companies were willing to grant.
