WOODVALE PURSE TO MONTSIN Ormont Filly Triumphs Over Band of Kentucky Derby Eligibles. Greentree Stables Hash Withdrawn From Race Bob McGarvey Saddles Rapid Way for Winning Debut. LEXINGTON, Ky., April 18 With Hash a withdrawal, the Woodvale Purse, most interesting event on todays Keeneland program, went to Montsin, one of the outsiders in the field of ten, of which Opelika, a winner on opening day and a Kentucky Derby eligible, was the favorite. Bearing the silks of Friedberg and Axton, Louisville racing partnership, the daughter of Ormont Cousin Ethel triumphed by two and one-half lengths over W. U. Ridenours Morcarine as Conn Smythes Skating Fool was another length and one-half back, in third place. Near-freezing weather prevailed for the days sport and only a fair-sized crowd was in attendance, but interest was at a high pitch. The track was slow after having been in a muddy condition over the week-end. In the Woodvale, a dash of six furlongs, for three-year-olds under allowance conditions, Morcarine had the most early speed, but although carefully rated in the pace-making role until well into the stretch, she was unable to meet Montsins challenge when Warren Yarberry set her down after bringing her up gradually rounding the turn. Skating Fool was far back in the early stages and had to lose ground when improving her position, as did Joharie, which also was among the early trailers. Wise Decision went well for three furlongs and then weakened. The victory gave Yarberry a double. WELDING EASILY BEST. Welding, daughter of Haste and Sickle Feathers, owned by J. E. Widener, proved easily best of the eleven maiden juveniles meeting under claiming conditions in the opening event over the Headley course. Installed the favorite, Welding made good by two lengths over Thea Dear, representing the Ferguson clan as D. B- Midkiffs Toast was third. Under hustling tactics from Warren Yarberry, Welding got to the front soon after the start, but she was called upon to stave off the bid of Thea Dear entering the stretch. Headleys Atatime, another eligible to the Churchill Downs classic, was a distant third. Yankee Lad was fourth among the seven maiden three-year-olds. Rapid Way was a bit tardy leaving the post in the third race, a split of the opening event, but after finding his stride he ran to his name to carry the William F. Morgan silks to an easy victory. Under restraint from Carroll Bierman in the final sixteenth, the son of Whiskaway and My Carolyne nevertheless won by four lengths over Baby Lamb as Swift Singer was third. Rapid Way was held at odds-on among the nine starters. STAGE HARD DUEL. Before the Morgan colt took command with a rush in the stretch, Baby Lamb and Perfect Rhyme staged a duel for leadership, with the latter tiring to finish fourth. J. E. Oros, the countrys leading rider, signalized his Keeneland debut by riding Molly Fly, the favorite, to victory in the fourth race for his mother, Mrs. E. Oros. The daughter of Flying Heels American Molly reached the end of the six furlongs dash a length and one-half in front of Brown Hotel Stables Ours as Bobbin was a close third. The colors of Louis B. Mayer were carried to their first Kentucky victory in the sixth race, which brought out eight likely juveniles. His colorbearer was Flying Mary, which outsprinted her opposition all the way, but had to be hard ridden by Carroll Bierman to win by a neck over J. E. Wideners Town Boy, the favorite. J. C. Milams Mer-ricks Place was a similar margin back, in third place, and well before Valdina Spy. It marked a double for Bierman.
