I 1- — I I I of Past— ] Kentucky Derbys From I903 to 1906, Inclusive „ . . m mm± In previous editions Daily Racing Form has reprinted the charts of the Kentucky Derby beginning with the Lawrin victory in 1938 back to 1919 when Sir Barton surprised the turf world by carrying off thecoveted prize as a maiden, never having won a race until that eventful day "in May. We believe our readers have found the reproduction of these charts of considerable interest and, but for the increasing number of meetings now under way or about to begin, these tabulations would be continued. However, such is not possible, though a brief summaiy of the Derbys of the past will be presented if space permits. The third group of summaries of the races from 1903 to 1906 are here shown: JUDGE HIMES — 1903. McDowell the following year put Dick Crowhurst on Bourbon and Helgerson on Woodlake and made another essay for the prize, but a couple of Chicagoans beat him to it, Judge Himes, ridden by H. Booker, at odds as high as 15 to 1, winning under the colors of Charles R. Ellison, after a drive with the favorite, M. H. Tichenor and Co.s Early, ridden by J. Winkfield. The winner was by Esher. A summary of the race follows: JUDGE HIMES— Ch. c, by Esher— Lullaby, by Longfellow 1 EARLY — Ch. c, by Troubadour— Miss Dawn, by Strathmore 2 BOURBON— B. c, by Sir Dixon— Kanawha, by Mortemer 3 Time, 2:09. Also ran— Bad News, Woodlake and Treacy. Six started. Favorite — Early. Winning owner— C. R. Ellison. Breeder — J. N. Camden, Kentucky. Two-year-old form— 10 starts, 1 win, 1 second, 2 thirds. ELWOOD— 1904. Elwood, a son of Free Knight, mounted by I jockey Prior, running in the name of Mrs. Lasca Durnell, wife of "Boots" Durnell, who at the outbreak of the recent war was in Roumania, an outsider in the betting, won the 1904 Derby, Ed Tierney second and Brancas third. It was a poor field. A summary of the race follows: ELWOOD— B. c, by Free Knight— Petticoat, by Alarm 1 ED TIERNEY— B. c, by Montana— Loo, by Darebin 21 BRANCAS— Ch. c, by Knight of Ellerslie— J Bracket, by Hanover 3 Time, 2:08%. Also ran— Prince Silverwings and Proceeds. Five started. Favorite — Brancas. Winning owner — Mrs. L. Durnell. Breeder — Mrs. J. B. Prather, Missouri. I Two-year-old form — 17 starts, 1 win, 2 seconds, 1 third. I J AGILE— 1905. Only three started over the muddy track the following year, when Capt. S. S. Browns Agile, by Sir Dixon, ridden by J. Martin, won at 1 to 3 easily from W. S. William and Co.s Rams Horn and T. P. Hayes Layson. A summary of the race follows: AGILE— B. c, by Sir Dixon— Alpena, by King Alfonso 1 RAMS HORN— B. c, by Bute— Aunt Tessa, by Uncle Jess 2 LAYSON— Br. c, by Charade— Lash, by Toison dOr 3 Time, 2:10%. Only three started. Favorite— Agile. Winning owner— S. S. Brown. Breeder— E. F. Clay, Kentucky, •lwo-year-old form— 25 starts, 5 wins, 5 seconds, 3 thirds. SIB HUON— 1906. Charles R. Ellison made another try for the Derby in 1906 and succeeded in getting second and third money with his pair, Lady of Navarre and James Reddick, the winner being the favorite, Sir Huon, bred and owned by George J. Long, saddled by Pete Coyne and ridden by Roscoe Troxler. He was the third son of Falsetto to triumph in the. race, though he was a tired horse at the end of his journey. Also ran— Hyperion H., Debar and Velour. Six started. Favorite — Sir Huon. Winning owner — G. J. Long. Breeder— G. J. Long, Kentucky. Two-year-old form — 9 starts, 4 wins, 2 seconds, 0 thirds.
