OLD ROSEBUSH SCORES Pelleteri Campaigner First Home in Baltimore Spring Handicap. Soggy Footing Prevails for Initial Program at Pimlico — Sun Egret Finishes in Second Place. PIMLICO, Md., May 1. — Mrs. Anthony Pelleteris Old Rosebush, in his top performance of the season, returned to winning form in the outstanding offering at Pimlico today. He accounted for the fifth revival of the Baltimore Spring Handicap, a six furlongs race that featured the inaugural card •of the Maryland Jockey Clubs spring meeting. Racing as the lightweight of the seven starters that met for the ,500 added event, worth ,530 to the Pelleteri coffers, the f ive-. year-old son of Infinite, under 112 pounds, achieved his success in rather easy fashion. It was his fourth victory in a dozen starts when he led A. C. C. Stables Sun Egret, winner of he Harford Handicap, to the line. Third fell to Rough Time, from the J. Y. Christmas barn, winner of the Inaugural n at Bowie and J. W. Y. Martins Battle Jack was in advance of Preeminent, Conquer and •Accolade, which finished in that order. The time for the running over the soggy under-footing was 1:13%, the slowest of any running of the event. ONLY SEVEN GO. _ The Baltimore Spring Handicap was placed sixth on the eight race card that served as the headliner at the Baltimore city grounds and it was reduced to seven starters when Drudgery, Rissa and Rehearsal declined the issue. However, those under colors were the pick of the lot and, "although the contestants finished in strung out order, it was a most interesting offering. The start was delayed but one minute before Rough Time stepped to the front at the bell with Old Rosebush attending him closely and Battle Jack holding third place well before the others. Sun Egret was fifth when he lacked his usual alacrity at the break. The pace was a fast one, considering the condition of the track, but Rough Time found it difficult to draw away from Old Rosebush, which was racing in sharper condition than in his last race and was unable to get more than a half length in front. With a half mile back of them, Old Rosebush surged to the front entering the stretch and drew away swiftly under light pressure -to register by two and one-half lengths. Kenneth Gilpins veteran steeplechaser Buck Langhorne was an easy winner of the .first steeplechase of the new season when he accounted for the Elkridge, a gallop of two miles that brought out seven starters and in which only three finished. This was the third offering on the card and those missing at the close of the contest were Paper Moon, Farndale, Wilfrid G. and "Barrystar. WINS AS RIDER PLEASES. - Jockey A. Scruton rode the winner and he had his mount prominent early while Broadside King led the way by a clear margin and took the fences in good fashion. There was another upset in the running of the second event, a sprint of six furlongs fashioned for cheap sprinters, when J. Kugelmans Chimney Top returned to winning form to take the measure of Jinx, Cleaning Time and eight others of which the disappointing favorite Great Haste was fourth. The finish was an exciting one when the first four were separated less than two [lengths and Chimney Top gaining his success by a half-length. | The success of Bomar Stables Billy Bee in j the decision of the fourth race for his sec-| ond victory this spring added to the disap-| pointment of favorites when he soundly defeated eight shifty sprinters at the end of six furlongs. Going to the front at the break in a start that saw Proph left in the stalls the Bomar Stable sprinter furnished all of the pace and reached the line with six lengths as his final margin. He went along in advance of Patsey Begone in the early stages then after meeting the best that the J. Y. Pyle mare could offer in the way of speed enjoyed his wide command all during the last half-mile. R. McKees Maecloud, another at liberal odds, finished in second place with Zostera barely beating Zenana for third place. Jockey M. Peters rode the winner and White Cockade was favorite. Nine three-year-olds of the better class furnished the contention in the mile and seventy yards of the fifth styled the Mt. Royal and it gave A. S. Hewitts Orcades another score when she duplicated her last success to turn in a driving triumph. Her victory gained at the expense of Millsdale Stables Sun Lover which was the best fancied starter took place by a neck as Sky-flier from the A. Untermyer stable snared a close decision for third over Dark Watch and the five others. A gap of four lengths separated second and third horses.
