, BIG SUNDAY CALIENTE CROWD Jarocho Chase Handicap Thrills the Pans, With Mrs. H. Webers Peter Russell Taking First Honors. AGUA CALIENTE, Mexico, May 1.— Before one of the largest crowds of the current meeting, the Baja California Jockey Club presented another brilliant offering here today. Among the vast throng were many out-of-town visitors and a good representation of society and distinguished citizens from San Diego and other nearby cities. The Jarocho Steeplechase Cup, fourth on the card, was the incentive which brought out the patrons and those who witnessed the event, certainly got the thrill they anticipated and whats more they witnessed a performer which recently was converted from a flat racer to a timber topper, when Mrs. H. Webers Peter Russell got away with the honors. The grey son of Sir Peter and Ave Russell acquitted himself in excellent style when he fenced faultlessly in his first essay over the obstacles. He was returned an easy winner, leading home the highly regarded Westbound, which carried the black and gold, silks of Count Anthony Z. Landi, into second place three lengths away, while third fell to Count Manuel Del Campos Pal Jose, which ruled second choice in the betting. PAT MOORE FOURTH. R. "Bob" Elsoms Pat Moore was fourth in the field of eight Under his light impost of 137 pounds, Peter Russell followed the pace under mild reserve and it was not until they made the turn approaching the stretch the last time -around that he was called upon for improved speed. Responding gamely, he moved into the lead and, once in the van, sped to hi3 conquest without stern opposition. Pal Jose gave a good account of himself when, he garnered the escond award and, while he failed to meet the demands of the winner, he had no difficulty holding West-, bound safe. The successful trio had the race between them throughout. Peter Russell paid 3.40 for each two dollar ticket.
