I LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Several retired a jockeys of prominence • are hoping for the e thrill tomorrow of saddling a Kentucky Derby winner. The sensation will not be e new to James Fitzsimmons, an outstanding E rider of another generation, as he has sent lt out Gallant Fox and Omaha to win the e classic, but eagerly hoping to join his class ls are Earl Sande and Louis Schaefer. Sande, who rode Zev, Flying Ebony and d Gallant Fox to victory in the Derby to tie with Isaac Murphy for the honor of having g guided the most winners of the classic, had d golden chance of saddling a winner of the e classic last spring until Stagehand became e although he did train The Chief, which h finished fifth. This year he has prepared d Heather Broom to represent John Hay y Whitney. Schaefer never had the pleasure of riding g Derby winner although he won numerous is important races including the Preakness 3S with Dr. Freeland. Still a comparatively young man, he has been training for William m Brann, Maryland sportsman and breeder, who has the utmost confidence in him, for ir several years, Schaefer developed Challedon, n, while Sande. only took over the training of Heather Broom during the winter. Some of the trainers of past Derby winners n- other than Fitzsimmons were former er jockeys, although none ever had ridden one. e Max Hirsch, conditioner of the 1936 winner er Bold Venture, was a saddle artist in his day, v while Clyde Van Dusen, who saddled his is namesake to capture the 1929 running, like-■ e- wise wore silks in many thrilling contests.
