CHARLES L. CARROLL DIES NEW YORK, N. Y., May 5.— Charles L. Carroll died from the effects of a stroke that he suffered in the receiving paddock before the first race. Carroll was sixty-years-old and had been associated with racing for many years. He was stable foreman for "Pittsburgh Phil" Smith when that owner was in his heydey. Carroll for many years had made his home at 405 Westminster Ave., Elizabeth, N. J., and is survived by his widow and several children. His Rosarian, which the stewards permitted to start in the first race, was returned the winner of that offering, which was saddled by Frank Clcary. . Funeral announcements will be made later. Carroll was well and favorably known to racing men on the New York tracks for the past thirty years.
