LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 5.— Before a crowd in excess of the Derby eve attendance , a year ago and with mid-summer I weather prevailing, E. E. Fogelsons Smart j Crack raced to a popular victory in the Mag-I nolia Purse, one of the features of a Churchill Downs program that also included I a renewal of the Bashford Manor Stakes, j Smart Cracks performance marked the second time the Fogelson silks were seen in I front during the afternoon, Strident winning • for the same establishment early in the afternoon. The Magnolia was contested at 1 seven furlongs. Smart Crack, whose victory also completed a double for apprentice Charles Charlton scored by a head as Evening Shadow ran second and Ridge third. Flora-gina was best of the others in the field of seven fillies and mares. Smart Crack bolted in a workout several mornings ago and apprentice Charlton exercised keen judgment in keeping her inside of horses at all stages of the race. After reaching the stretch the filly was sent up between horses and eventually wore down Evening Shadow to score her popular triumph. Ridge made up ground in the run through the stretch and finished within a length and a quarter of the runher-up, while beating Floragina two lengths for third money, Smart Crack covered the seven furlongs in 1:26 on a fast track. Included in todays attendance were hundreds "of out-of-town visitors, a turnout that augurs well for tomorrows Derby gathering.
