The evolution of Churchill Downs, scene of the Kentucky Derby, Americas outstanding turf event, from a1 one mile ellipse with one stand and a* clubhouse into the mammoth plant which now comfortably seats thousands upon thousands of fans, is a. story in itself. Stretching from well around the upper stretch turn, the stands and box seats now occupy every inch of space clear to the lower stretch turn, from .which point the Derby field gets away. Like Topsy, Churchill Downs just "grew and grew." The latest vantage point added for the comfort of fans was the Terrace Bleachers on the far turn or, to be more specific, the turn out of the backstretch. There the Derby fan who cannot afford to pay the price of admission into the grandstand or clubhouse enclosure, can enter the grounds for fifty cents and purchase .00 mutuel tickets, a sum exactly half of the lowest priced mutuel tickets sold heretofore. The diagram below is an architects drawing of Churchill Downs. It is faithful in every detail and undoubtedlyiWill give those fans unable to be present for the Derby, a chance to visualize the scene. It should be especially helpful to radio listeners. / •
