CHICAGO MAY SEE CHALLEDON AND JOHNSTOWN . BOTH IN THE CLASSIC Three-Year-Old Championship May Be Decided in Arlington Event. Challedon a Supplementary Entry at ,500 — Seventy-Seven Named* for 5,000 Prize. Mid-West turf fans are excited over the prospect of the meeting of Johnstown, the Kentucky Derby hero, and Challedon, the Marylander which won the Preakness last Saturday, for the American three-year-old championship in the Classic Stakes at Arlington Park on July 22. Both horses are nominated for the Classic, the mile and a quarter highlight of the Illinois season. This year the value of the race is high, with the gross prize estimated at 5,000 and about 4,000 going to the winner. The winning owner also will receive the intrinsically valuable trophy in American racing, a solid fourteen-carat gold replica of the historic English Coronation Cup. MEETING LIKELY. Barring training accidents, Arlington officials are confident that both Challedon and Johnstown will be shipped here for the Classic in July. Two sentimental bonds tie the horses to the race. Christopher J. FitzGerald, the noted breeding savant and steward representing the Illinois Racing Commission, is one of the strongest supporters of the Challenger H. blood lines which sired Challedon. He also is a long time friend of owner W. L. Brann. On the Johnstown side, William Woodward already has won three Classic Stakes with Gallant Fox, Omaha and Granville, and will be striking for his fourth victory with Johnstown. Challedon was one of the four supplementary entries at a ,500 fee in the Classic. In all, seventy-seven three-year-old3 were named for the race on July 22.
