U. S. HAS ,000,000,000 DEFICIT FOR CURRENT YEAR WASHINGTON, D. C, May 15.— The federal governments deficit for the current fis-cay year passed the three billion dollar level today, almost three times as large as it was a year ago. Latest treasury figures showed that receipts since July 1, 1938, totalled ,908,867,056, while expenditures reached ,912,202,156, leaving a spending excess of ,003,335,099. At this time a year ago the deficit was ,134,220,550. In his budget message to Congress, President Roosevelt forecast a gross deficit of ,426,343,200 by June 30. Expenditures for the year will have reached ,995,000,000, while receipts will yield only ,669,000,000. . At this time a year ago, government revenues had yielded ,336,-000,000. Expenditures for the corresponding period of 1938 were ,500,000,000 less. Thus far in this fiscal year the treasury has paid out over 20,000,000 for national defense as against 00,000,000 a year ago. The governments relief bill between July 1 and May 12 was ,704,000,000, approximately ,000,000,000 higher than for the same period a year earlier.
