ZOIC SCORES IN STAKED Triumphs in Plymouth Rock Handicap at Suffolk Downs. Bobby Merritt Again in the Limelight Following His Triple Score at Narragansett Saturday. BOSTON, Mass., May 15— Bobby Merritt, who won the Newport Handicap astride Fag-liacci at Narragansett on Saturday, came back to win another ,000 stake as Suffolk Downs opened a sixty-day meeting this afternoon, guiding H. Engers Zoic to a front-running score in the three-quarters Plymouth Rock Handicap. The gelded son of Prince of Wales, displaying the form that distinguished his racing here in past years, cut out all his own pace and held on courageously under a hard drive to stave off Tommy Heard, Jr.s, crack filly Be Blue by a head. J. Y. Christmas Rough Time finished third in the field of eight, just a neck back of the runner-up and half a length in front of Sun Egret. The latter, which ruled favorite, met interference when making his bid at the three-eighths pole. Although,, the sun was shining that old East wind, the nemesis of Suffolk Downs since the inception of the sport, was blowing and the day was bitterly cold. Despite this fact a crowd of 20,000 turned out to welcome the thoroughbreds back to the Boston area. ZOICS EARLY ADVANTAGE. Zoic and Be Blue fought it out all the way in the feature. Zoic broke on top and drew off to an advantage of a length and a half as they went down the back stretch with Battle Jack third and Court Dance fourth. At the far turn Sun Egret began to charge up fast on the inside and appeared a very dangerous factor. He met interference at the three-eighths marker, however, and was knocked off stride. Zoic came into the stretch leading by a length and a half, but j at the eighth pole J. G. Wilson set Be Blue down hard and the daughter of Blue Larkspur was catching the leader with every stride as they sped down the final sixteenth. Merritt was working just as hard on the winner, however, and he held his mount together long enough to take the decision by a head. Rough Time moved to third place as they entered the stretch, and was closing stoutly in the final seventy yards. The winner finished out in 1:12 flat, good time over this track, which is not yet packed down and is deep. SUPPORTING ATTRACTION. Mrs. P. A. Shaws Holluschickie closed with a great burst of speed from the three-eighths post home to win the Revere Handicap, supporting attraction on the program, by a length and a half over "Tobe" Trotters Silent Witness. The latter, a hard luck horse if ever there was. one, was probably the best. He was off very, slowly, was pinched off on the first turn and then went to the outside fence at the head of the stretch. At the end, Silent Witness was two lengths in advance of H. P. Metcalfs Roman Lady. Swahili, the favorite, was killed off when he went with the early speedster, Gallant Stroke, early and could land no better than a distant fourth in the field of six. The time was 1:44%. H. and H. Stock Farms Deep Summer won the four and a half furlongs event for maiden juveniles, which opened the Suffolk Downs meeting. The daughter of Priory, ridden by Willie Hillman, took the lead at the head of the stretch and finished two i | and a half lengths in advance of Mrs. W. C. Stroubes High Arch. Willis Sharpe Kilmers Dark Palatine, coupled in the betting with Sun Patty, was third, a neck off the runner-up and just a head in front of Close Quarters. The winner finished out in :55%. The race was the first at four and a half furlongs ever run at Suffolk Downs. BY NARROW MARGIN. Mrs. L. A. Brusies Macie Margaret won the narrowest sort of decision over Medway Stables Lady Hav in the mile event that was second on the card, dropping her nose down right at the wire to earn the decision. Eddie Robart put up a hustling stretch ride to land the winner home in front. Two lengths back of the battling leaders Mrs. J. D. Wilsons Fiddle Faddle finished third, two lengths off the runner-up and a head in advance of Proud King. Proud King, Butterman and Six Flags battled it out in the early pace, with Proud King opening up four lengths on all rivals on the far turn. On the turn Macie Margaret flew up to take second place. She was down on the rail at the stretch and, after she got to the front briefly at the sixteenth pole, Lady Hav charged up on the outside to head her. D. J. Schnieders Idle Sun took the lead at the far turn and drew off from that point home under Euclid LeBlanc to win the three-quarters third event by two lengths over Distractible. Ozark, an early trailer, closed fast to take the third award, a neck off the runner-up. Phalasan, heavily-backed favorite, was a distant fourth. She showed only a flash in the early running. The winner finished out ?n 1:33%. MIX WELL IN THRILLER. Weston Adams, son of the president of Suffolk Downs, won the fourth race as Eddie Robart rode Mixwell to a thrilling victory over Mrs. Emil Denemarks Minimum. Robart, who was completing a double, kept Mixwell in front for virtually the entire distance and put up a superb stretch drive to have his mount a head in advance of the fast-closing Minimum at the wire. Dinner Jacket was third, a length and a half off the runner-up, and Addis finished fourth. The time was 1:12%. Although only seven platers met in the one mile and a sixteenth of the seventh race, it was one of the most spirited contests of the afternoon. Terpsichore was the winner after leading practically throughout, although her winning margin was only a head. Dark Beau was second, a nose before Kenyon C.
