OPENING AT NORTH RANDALL Neighbor Wins Inaugural Handicap for Jesse Spencer. 12,000 Spectators Witness Running of First Program at New Cleveland Track — Intermittent Showers Occur. CLEVELAND, Ohio, May 27.— Intermittent showers failed to dampen the enthusiasm of more than 12,000 spectators who were pres-: ent for the ushering in of the Cleveland Jockey Clubs thirty-three day meeting at North Randall here this afternoon. Thrilling stretch duels, resulting in numerous close finishes, furnished brilliant entertainment for the sportively inclined patrons from Cleveland and its environs. Although showers fell at intervals, the track proper was unaffected by the precipitation and the main attraction was decided over a fast track and resulted in establishing the first new track record for a mile and a sixteenth, inasmuch as the opening race was at the same distance and in which the standard was set. The Inaugural Handicap, which brought together seven routers to compete, held the splotlight of the days sport and carried a net value of ,015 to the winner. Only one of the eight named in the overnight entries declined the issue when High One was withdrawn in favor of his stable companion, Pompeys Pillar, colorbearer from the stable of A. C. Snyder. Jesse Spencers four-year-old bay gelding, Neighbor, proved best of the seven contestants in the inaugural when he came from behind in the stretch drive to defeat Winston Guests Drudgery by a half-length, with Mrs. A. M. Creechs Dusky Prince four lengths farther back in third place at the conclusion of the mile and a sixteenth test. Francesco was fourth, while Sortie Star, Continued on fortieth page. Fractious at the starting gate, Neighbor was away none too rapidly, but jockeyKarl Greever, who was astride the son of Lee O. Cotner— Fannie J. set sail for the leaders after getting straightened away and, despite the fact that the gelding v/as bearing out during the stretch drive, got up in time to take the measure of Drudgery. Neighbor was not strongly fancied by the speculatively inclined patrons, who backed Francesco into favoritism, with Drudgery the runner-up, and therefore straight tickets on the winner were redeemed for-8.20 each.
