RUNS MILE IN 1:354-5 Brilliant Son of Jamestown and His Stablemate Held at 1-8. Hash Finishes Second, Porters Mite Third and Gilded Knight Fourth — - Knickerbocker Is Scratched. -■NEW YORK, N. Y., May 27— William Woodwards familiar white and red polka dot silks were borne to another triumph in Americas turf fixtures at Belmont Park today when Johnstown made a show of four rivals in the sixty-fourth running of the Withers Stakes, just as he had done in .the Kentucky Derby, Wood Memorial Stakes and Paumonok Handicap. Again racing in his top form as a fast, dry track prevailed, the son of Jamestown and La France was never out of a pull after Jimmy Stout placed him in his stride and he galloped to victory six lengths before Mrs. Payne Whitneys Greentree colt Hash. William E. Boeings Futurity winner, Porters Mite, was beaten a head for second place as Gilded Knight and Birch Rod trailed far back. A crowd of more than 20,000 persons saw Johnstown run the Withers mile in 1:35%, missing Jack Highs track record by only four-fifths of a second. The Belair color-bearer possibly would have threatened the mark had he been given a challenge through the stretch, but after the opening sixteenth of a mile he never was in danger as Stout bad everything but a strangle hold on him. COMPENSATE FOR GANNET. Closing at 1 to 8, Johnstown, coupled in the wagering with the Wheatley Stables disappointing Gilded Knight, compensated those of the favorite players willing to take the shortest odds of the meeting for the downfall of Gannet in the Juvenile Stakes, co-feature with the Withers. The B. F. Whitaker colt could do no better than finish third to Alvin Untermyers Cockerel and Alfred Vanderbilts filly, Now What, the latter two being separated by a neck. The Juvenile purse was §4,775. In giving the chairman of The Jockey Club his first Withers score Johnstown won 5,750 and increased his earnings for the season, the result of five victories in six starts, to 7,625. His total winnings are now 19,045. Carrying 118 pounds, as did his opponents. Johnstown was the first to show in front in a good start, quickly obtained by George Cassity. Stout hustled him along for nearly a sixteenth to put him in a clear lead before crossing his reins. Once Stout took hold of the bay colts head he lengthened his stride and went the first quarter in :23 to open up an advantage of four lengths. 1 REMARKABLE SPEED. I Striding easily as Stout sat almost straight VP in the saddle, the Woodward star ran the half mile in :46% and, continuing in the same fashion around the turn, reached the three-quarters mark in 1:10. Without his rider making a move, Johnstown increased his advantage to six lengths in midstretch 1 " Continued on thirty-second page. Gilded Knight attempted to lay close to Johnstown in the early stages but, although he was confidently expected to finish in second place, he gave up after the first quarter as Porters Mite went past him on the outside. In the turn Hash advanced along the rail and, getting to the Boeing colt in the stretch, wore him down under strong riding. Hash ran the mile in 1:37 and worked out nine furlongs in 1:52 and the mile and one-quarter in 2:10. He is eligible to the Belmont Stakes next Saturday, as are the other Withers contestants. Cockerel, winner over Now What in the ,Pimlico Nursery when the Vanderbilt filly was making her first start, outgamed her again in the sixty-third running of the Juvenile Stakes after she had brought an end to Gannets respectable string of victories. The locally-owned son of Transmute— Chickie, strongly ridden by Eddie Arcaro, ran the five furlongs in :57% to gain a neck triumph over Now What, as Gannet was three lengths back and well before Maetran and Wise Bee, the only other starters. Leo Fallon hustled Now What into an early lead and kept her going at a smart clip to bring about the defeat of Gannet in the opening three furlongs. Entering the final quarter when Now What, the second choice to Gannet, appeared to have a safe margin, Arcaro called on Cockerel after having saved him in the early stages. Responding with much courage and Tuning straight and true, Cockerel gained steadily on Now What, and although Fallon shook up his mount in the final sixteenth, it was to no avail and the LTntermyer colt dropped his head in front a few strides from the finish. Although tiring, Gannet held on for third honors, as* Maetran was unable to threaten, and Wise Bee faltered.
