f AK-SAR-BEN TURF NOTES | $ ® The new "tote" board which was installed this season, was given a good rehearsal Friday and worked accurately. The device was constructed under the advice of W. H. Schell-berg, chairman of racing. Among the belated arrivals were the stables of H. C. "Clay" McConnell, whq brought eight head, mostly two-year-olds which have never started; Mrs. C. W. Tague shipped in with Rare Ben and Little Wick; Mrs. H. Derbys horses, in charge of F. Derby, unloaded in good condition and are Star Royal and Le Karonga; the W. W. Bryant horses, also in charge of Derby, are j i Mary Tame, Seths. Lady and Brown Cody; I C. H. Miller brought in Trumont and Pansy Ann; W. G. Montgomery was given quarters ! for Amazement, which he races for himself, and Bobby Easter, the property of B. Hod-son, and Airzon, coloibearer for Loury and Bentley, is also under the direction of Montgomery. Charles J. Gamble, San Diego owner, reports the condition of Genitum greatly improved. The colt was running a temperature when unloaded after his trip from Agua Caliente. J Clyde Mawhinney, well-known breeder and owner from Ravenna, Neb., sent five head j here for competition. His stock consists of several- Nebraska-breds, which are eligibles . for the impending Nebraska Derby and Futurity and are named Miss Vesta, Elsies Color, All McAllister, Gold Mixer and Heathen Arc. They are under the care of trainer Melvin Stubbs. George Simmons, a neighbor of the famous Ben Jones, who hails from Parnell, Mo., checked in with Lucille H., Glencot, Delano C. and Marys Rival. Jockey Ned Merritt, affiliated with the stable of E. H. Beezley, was among the riders whose applications were approved by the officials. Merritt was the leading rider at Agua Caliente when he departed to ride at Tanforan. The many friends of J. J. Murphy, correspondent for Dally Racing Form for almost two decades, were very happy to learn of his appointment as steward at Agua Caliente. Murphy covered the racing at Ak-Sar-Ben for several seasons. Fred Nancolas, a regular at Ak-Sar-Ben every season, is back again for another session and has a rather useful string, which is comprised of Keokee, Young Agnes, Full Tilt and three others. The board of stewards, Ben Holmes, Albert J. Heffernan and J. A. Cullen, who will be in charge of the Ak-Sar-Ben racing, put in a busy day passing on the many applications filed -Friday. W. A. Philpot, of Gandy, Neb., who seldom misses a meeting at Ak-Sar-Ben, is back with a string of four head, consisting of Balkan Land, Pindars Pet, Rebel Pindar and Seths Peel. Apprentice Marion Robison will do the riding for the Philpot establishment. The Drigger Bros., of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, are here for the first time and have the horses Jeffs Pride, Dicks Choice and French Servant in charge of trainer J. F. Sullivan.
