MURPHYS VISIT "SOCIAL" SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., May 27.— United States Attorney General Frank Murphy was in San Francisco today on a "social visit" • that included interviews with mysterious | Alcatraz prison personalities, the United States District Attorney, F. B. I. officials and skeptical newspapermen. He indicated the primary reason for his visit was to investigate espionage although he insisted that no particular significance should be attached to his presence in the West Coasts center of military tand naval operations. With him came F. B. I. chief J. Edgar Hoover, who said he was not at liberty to discuss "tha local situation." Then added: "But I can tell you this. Spy activities in the United States have greatly increased in the last few months and were hoping for an added appropriation to allow our department to go deeper into the situation." Suspected income tax dodging by Hollywood picture executives Murphy revealed, is being rigorously investigated by Department of Justice oper atives. Briefly explaining his swing around the country as one to "energize" the administration of justice, Murphy said that certain California oil companies, suspected of monopolistic practices, are being investigated by the government. Murphy revealed he was keeping abreast of developments in alleged sabotage in West Coast airplane factories and asserted violations of civil liberties by the associated farmers.
