SASSY MATE AND MAN1E OHARA WIN CRETE STAKES 2 • Thirteen Thousand Watch First Lincoln Fields Half-Holiday Card « Entry Runs One-Two in Kankakee Handicap, With Manie OHara Winner by Two Lengths — Downy Pillow Disappoints in Dearborn Handicap ♦ CRETE, 111., May 27.— Performing under the silks of Mrs. Kirby Ramsey, Sassy Mate, winner of her only other engagement, became a stakes winner this afternoon when she captured the Dearborn Handicap which, with the Kankakee Handicap, featured the half-holiday program at Lincoln Fields. With approximately 13,000 persons in attendance, the two-year-old, daughter of Mate and Fair Belle, led from soon after the start and completed the five furlongs three lengths before her nearest rival. While Sassy Mate, which ran the distance on a heavy track in 1:03%, was scoring her second victory, W. F. Morgans Downy Pillow, winner of the Debutante Stakes at Churchill Downs, was disappointing her supporters for the first time. Downy Pillow, captor of the one other race besides the Debutante, and a strong favorite for todays engagement, was unfortunate enough to draw an inside post position and, unable to get into her best stride in the deeper footing, finished third. J. W. Parrishs Whim Wham was second, a length and a half in front of the favorite. J. E. Wideners Welding, which ran fourth, and Clyde Van Dusens Betty Sweep rounded out the field of five juvenile fillies, which started. SOMETHING IN RESERVE. Betty Sweep raced in closest attendance of Sassy Mate for about a quarter mile and when she gave way Whim Wham took up the hopeless chase. Whim Wham remained within a length of the Ramsey filly to the final eighth, and then Sassy Mate began to draw clear, winning with something in reserve. R. L. Vedder was astride the Mate filly, who performed under 118 pounds, four less than Downy Pillow had to shoulder. Through her victory today, Sassy Mate, whom Mrs. Ramsey purchased at Louisville this spring, earned ,075, and those who backed her in the mutuels received a little more than 3 to 1. She was saddled for this victory by Mrs. Ramseys husband, who earlier in the day sent Dolly Whisk out for a winning effort under the colors of E. A. • Carney. The Kankakee which, like the Dearborn, was worth ,500 in added money, was a mile sprint for older fillies and mares, and it resulted in victory for Manie OHara, owned by Hyman Friedberg and Edwin Axton, as her running mate, Bala Ormont finished second. Manie OHara, a gray daughter of The Satrap, covered the distance in 1:42% under the guidance of Nun-zio Pariso, and that splendid effort on the prevailing tough track landed her home two lengths in front of her stable companion which, in turn, beat the favorite, E. Manie OHara earned ,220 through her triumph, while Bala Ormont added another 00 to the stables coffers by running second. Although skies were cloudy much of the afternoon, pleasant weather prevailed for the sport. The racing was interesting and well backed horses uniformly gave good accounts of themselves and that helped keep patrons in high spirits. The first race, a substitute for the original first, which was declared off because of heavy withdrawals, saw Dominick DiBellas . Lifelike win in one-sided fashion. The mud-running son of Torchilla, a 9 to 10 chance in the betting, was sent to the front on the turn and she continued to leave her rivals behind until at the end of the six furlongs she was in front by eight lengths. Roundheel finished second, with Night Mist running third and Kitty Carroll fourth. TRANSPORT IMPRESSIVELY. Mrs. G. B. Scallons Transport won the six furlongs second race in as impressive fashion as Lifelike. With Herb Litzenberger at the reins, the Texas-owned gelding won by five lengths as Noticing ran second and Chief Menteur third. Sadie F. was the first to make the pace, but she began to falter after three-eighths and Chief Menteur took command. The latter then held sway to the stretch, where Transport, which had been under strong restraint for a half mile, forged to the front and drew away steadily. . The, Shandon Farm, maintained by P. A. and R. J. Nash of Chicago, provided the winner of "the third race in Yankee Lad, which led almost all the way over the six furlongs. assumed the lead and never gave it up. King Cotton, which came from a good way back, moved up boldly to Yankee Lad approaching the final eighth, but Yarberry went to work on his mount with renewed vigor and he drew clear to score by a little more than a length. King Cotton took .second place, three lengths before Slavic, while Buddy Rogers was just a head farther back in fourth position at the wire. DOLLY WHISK ALL THE WAY. Dolly Whisk, racing under the silks of E. A. Carney, made every post a winning one in the six furlongs fourth race. With Charles Kurtsinger up, Dolly Whisk set her own pace under a good hold and when roused in the stretch to meet the challenge of Finella stuck gamely to her task, drawing away in the last sixteenth to win by two lengths. Finella was unable to handle the winner," but she was easily best of the others, as the third horse, Viragin, was three lengths farther back at the end of the sprint. Eye Knocker, the favorite, finished fourth.
