YM June 27. Whirlaway again proved himself champion, as he so often did for- Warren Wright last year, when he was winner of the old Brooklyn Handicap of the Queens County Jockey Club at Aqueduct today. The little racer had to be hard driven by George Woolf before he ran down Greentree Stables Swing and Sway, but he came out of the mile and one-quarter gallop without taking a long breath and he had stepped the distance in 2:02 under a burden of 128 pounds. This prize added another 3,650 to his earnings, bringing his total to 04,-486, just 3,244 back of the earnings of Seabiscuit, who holds the money championship. Mrs. Parker Comings Attention was third in the Brooklyn, with The Rhymer, stablemate of Swing and Sway, fourth. Unfavorable weather had its effect on the attendance, but the gate count was 22,054, while it was evxident that there was some conservation of gas and rubber when many df them traveled by the Long Island Railroad. Fund of 00,000 Assured The big Brooklyn Handicap day was turned over to the Army and Navy,, just as the Westchester Association turned over Belmont day of their season, and before the running of the Brooklyn, president Theodore Knapp made the announcement that, should the receipts to be turned over to the branch of the service, failed to reach 00,000, the difference would be made up to such a donation. There was but one scratch from the Brooklyn entries sent out overnight, when Corydon was withdrawn, still leaving Swing and Sway and The Rhymer to race for Mrs. Payne Whitney. George Cassidy lost little time in having them right away in excellent alignment and Johnny Longden at once went into the command with Swing and Sway. Once well in stride he took a slight hold of the Equipoise colt to hold his position while Olympus followed closely and Attention was going stride for stride with the Bar-rington hope. Paperboy followed these, and then came Tola Rose, The Rhymer, Continued on Page Four . ............ r. ,WY.n..--Jr..v.J..,vVJ..,..vWy,Km WHIRLAWAY Moved a step closer to Seabiscuits world money record of 37,730 in winning 3,650 first prize money in the Brooklyn. His earnings now total 04,486. This was the order in which they raced into the back stretch. At the half mile ground Woblf moved up slightly with Whirlaway electing to go to the inside of Paperboy. For an instant there seemed a danger that he would be trapped, but he found room through. He almost at once took hold of the little chestnut and permitted Attention and Paperboy to draw away from him slightly. Length and Three-Quarters in ront Swing and Sway was still going strongly in the lead when the stretch was reached and he had taken care of Olympus before making the turn for home. Meade was making his bid with Attention and he went into second place right at the heels of Mrs. Whitneys colt. Woolf, in the meantime, had gone to the outside with Whirlaway and when he found the leaders were not coming back to him he drew his whip and went to work on Whirlaway. The little colt really flattened down and began to run when he felt the sting of the whip and stride by stride he drew up until a sixteenth out it was apparent he would be the winner. Swing and Sway hung on with excellent courage, and Whirlaway was bearing out slightly as he made his winning charge. It carried him to a victory of a length and three-quarters while Swing and Sway had saved the place by a length and a. half from Attention. Mrs. Comings colt was finding the mile and a quarter a shade too far and he only beat The Rhymer a head for third. v One of the greatest surprises of the day came in the running of the Great American, the companion feature to the Brooklyn Handicap, when William Ziegler, Jr.s Breezing Home, a noii-winner, the longest shot of the small company, was the winner, with William duPont, Jr.s Supermont, the favorite, finishing last. Famous Victory, carrying the silks of John Hay Whitneys Mares Nest Stud, took the place, and the Wheatleys Stables Best Irish, the only other starter, beat Four Freedoms, the stablemate of Famous Victory for the place. Mrs. Tilyou Christophers Doublrab, winner of the Carter Handicap under a burden of 120 pounds, carried five pounds more in the Army and Navy Handicap, and when he was winner by two lengths he had established a new track record of 1:10. C. V. Whitneys Parasang, with a great rush through the final furlong, landed in the place before Overdrawn and Col. Teddy was fourth. There came a spill in the. TJ. S. Coast Guard Purse, a dash of six furlongs, when Charlie Wahler was unseated from Hubbub, the favorite. This came when the colt was caught in close quarters and, as he ran up on the heels of another horse, his mount stumbled so badly that Wahler was hurdled forward from his mount to hit Halcyon Boy and bounce back to his own horse before he finally hit the track.
