Elmore Seeking Stallion TV Fill Torchillas Stall Son of Torchbearer Dies After Being Transferred to New Home JULIAN, Calif., June 27. California breeding suffered a loss recently when the 18-year-old stallion, Torchilla, owned by J. J. Elmore, of Brawley, died of sleeping sickness. Torchilla, who served several mares for Elmore during the past few months, was recently moved from the heat of Imperial Valley to the cooler Julian region for the summer. Shortly after his arrival at the mountain town he showed signs of listlessness and his condition gradually became worse until Dr. W. G. George was called in. The veterinarian found it impossible to save the animal. v Torchilla, a son of Torchbearer Chilla, by Alvescot, was purchased by Elmore from Louis B. Mayer about a year ago for a re- ported price -of ,500. He was one of the first sires selected by Mayer when he entered breeding and made the 1940 and 1941 seasons at the Mayer ranch. He was a horse of good disposition and conformation and Elmore had every hope that he would prove one of the best producers in California. The dead stallion was bred in Kentucky by Clyde Van Dusen and was bought by Mayer when he took over a number of horses owned by Van Dusen shortly after he engaged the ex-joGkey as his trainer. Torchilla raced as a three-, four-, five- and six-year-old, starting 30 times and winning 13 races. He was then placed in the stud and got a number of useful racers, the best of whom was probably King Torch, sensation of the last Hollywood Park meeting when he beat Mioland in the Sunset Handicap and Big Pebble in the Westcourt Handicap. Despite the loss of his stallion, Elmore intends to remain in the breeding industry. He has another sire, the imported stallion Palmar, whom he returned to training after giving him a chance last year but he is now seeking a proved stud of about the quality of Torchilla.
