Nineteen Matrons at Morven Stud Ranks Increased! By Home Produce It Is Whitney Stones Policy To Retain Selected Fillies Annually for Breeding CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., June 27. Come down Charlottesville way and visit Whitney Stones Morven Stud. Let the cares that infest the day lose themselves in the winding, dirt road known as "Presidents Road," from which access is gained to "MonticellOi" home of Thomas -Jeffer-. son, and "Ash Lawn," one-time residence of James Monroe, and this picturesque thoroughbred nursery where fourteen foals of this season romp their carefree way. Morvens latest crop consists of sons and daughters of the stallions Stimulus, Sir Gallahad III., Tintagel, Psychic Bid, Foray II. and Pompey. The latter is the nineteen-year-old son of Sun Briar from the , great race mare Cleopatra who is owned jointly by Morven Stud and the nearby Ellerslie Stud of Arthur B. Hancock. The strapping bay sire of such excellent per- formers as Ladysman, Pompoon, Oscula-tor and others does not make his home here. He stands at adjoining Ellerslie. This years representatives of Pompey with those of other sires are as follows: Colts Bay, by Sir Gallahad HE. Blue Sheen, by Toro. Bay, by Tintagel Bonne Etoile, by Wrack. Bay, by Sir Gallahad m. Raynham Rose, by ! Stimulus. Bay, by Tintagel Sunana, by Sun Edwin. 1 The predominance of filly foals, as noted : from the fact that this years crop includes nine members of the sex, means that Mor- j j vens. brood mare band will perhaps be gaining new recruits within a few years as : it is Stones policy usually to retain a few , homebreds in each crop of foals. That is how the nurserys harem has grown. Be- 1 . ginning with four mares in 1926, the group of matrons has been increased by the purchase of representatives of the most successful producing lines and the retention of certain homebreds until it now num-. bers 19. Foundation Brood Mares Among the four foundation mares were the Huon mare Sandwich, who produced the stake winner Backgammon; the Fair Play matron Margie C, dam of the Florida Derby winner Lightning Bolt, arid Bramble Rose. That daughter of Von Tromp Rose-gal, by Galveston, produced Vander Pool, the best horse bred here thus far, in addition to contributing to the enlargement of the harem through her daughter Flick-away. Other matrons have daughters at stud here. Margie C, the get of Fair Play and the Star Shoot mare Magna Stella, contributed Fair Stella, she by Wrack, and Patria, she by Pompey. Both served in the stud for a time. Bonne Etoile and Blue Eagle enlarged the brood mare colony through daughters. The former, a daughter of Wrack Etoile Filante, by Fair Play, is represented by Bongo, a get of Sir Gallahad HE.-, while Blue Eagles offspring serving in the stud now is Blue Sheen who, in turn, is the dam of Blue Vixen, another home matron. Blue Sheen was one of the top fillies of the three-year-old division in 1936. Her most impressive score of that season was ; in the Acorn Stakes when she flaunted the Stone colors successfully over George D. Wideners High Fleet and the King Ranchs : Split Second. Morven Studs brood mares, with a slight ; background touch about them and the stallions to whom they were mated this season, are as follows: Blind Lane, bay, 1928, by Blind Play Silver Lane, by Jim Gaffney.
