Forty-Five Foals at Valdina Farms Colts in Majority This Year At Woodwards Texas Stud EMERSON F. WOODWARD Master of Valdina Farms. Count Is Twenty-Four to Twenty-One Last Crop By Sortie Has Arrived HOUSTON, Texas, June 27. Forty-five foals, 24 colts and 21 fillies, comprise the 1942 crop at Emerson F. Woodwards Valdina Farms. The youngsters are the offspring of Valdina sires, Osculator, Teddys Comet, Petrose and Sortie, and .one each by Discovery and Bahram. The. foals by Sortie are the last produce of that stallion, as he died shortly after the mating season last year. Teddys Comet, whose first foals reached the races this -year as two-year-olds, has 12 foals in the current crop and nine of them are colts. They include half-brothers to the good stake winners Waddy and Poly-jmelior. His fillies include half-sisters to the stake winner Steel Heels and the winner Valdina Valet. Osculator, which has been the premier sire at Valdina for the past few years, .has 14 foals, only five of which are colts. Sorties last crop consists of five colts and four fillies and Petrose is represented by three colts and five fillies. The colts by Discovery and Bahram are among the best of the. foals. The Discovery colt is out of the producing mare, Cleaner, by Sweep, and the Bahram colt is from Sweep Myth, by Sweep, and therefore a half-sister to Valdina Myth, winner of six stakes and leading juvenile filly money-winner of her year. Ninety-Six Mares Bred Of the 112 matrons at Valdina, 96 were bred for 1943 foaling. Teddys Comet, whe has several good winners in his first crop this season, was mated with 29 mares, including Fast Heels, Sunmelia, Sweep Myth and Sweet Beam, each of whom has produced a stake winner. Osculators 17 mates include Aphaona, the dam of Valdina Alpha; Sea Gem, highly-prized imported mare, and War Infant and Warring Lady, daughters of Man o War. Knights Caprice, Irish-bred stallion im-j ported last year, made his first season ac I Valdina and was mated with 23 mares, including Cross Village, dam of the stake winners Ariel Cross and Roy T.; Ellipse, dam of Waddy and other winners, and Eastern Fashion, dam of Sir Jim James. Petroses book of 24 mates included Mary Eloise, dam of Bootless, and Sun Celerina, for whom Woodward paid 6,500 at the Kilmer dispersal sale. Three mares were mated with Bahram, who made the 1942 season at Walter P. Chryslers North Wales Stud in VLfinia. They are the imported mare, Salvation, and Swift Light and Valdina Myth, both of whom were bred for the. first time. Fifty-Five in Yearling String Valdinas yearling band numbers 35 colts and 20 fillies. The colts include six imports, three of which are by Bahram and one each by Fairway, Hyperion and Mah-moud. There also is a yearling son of Hyperion Sea Gem, brought to this country in utero and foaled at Valdina last spring. He is reported to be one of thfe finest individuals ever foaled in Texas- The names for the six imported colts have been approved by The Jockey Club. They are Valdina Buchan, bay colt, by Bahram Flounder, by Buchan; Valdina Gwyn, bay colt, by Bahram Gwynia, by Salmon-Trout; Valdina Leaf, brown colt by Bahram Gold Leaf n., by Clarissimus; Valdina Pama, brown colt, by Fairway Pama, by Alan Breck; Valdina Perion, dark chestnut colt, by Hyperion Bellecroix, by Asterus, and Valdina Zenith, chestnut colt, by Mahmoud The Zenith, by Transcendent. Valdina Gwyn is a half-brother to Half Crown, owned by the Christiana Stables. Other promising yearlings in the Valdina group are colts by Questionnaire Furtive, by Sir Gallahad HI.; Sun Briar -Rivalry, by Blandford; Gino Sun Celerina, by Sun Briar; Osculator Flapper Fanny, by Sweep; Bull Dog Advising Anna, by Blon-din; Teddys Comet Idle Victory, by Victorian; and fillies by Teddys Comet Fast. Heels, by Outplay; Sortie Sentry Lass, by The Porter, and Osculator Warring Lady, by Man o War.
