Peabody Peabody Memorial Memorial Draws Draws Nine; Nine; Armed Armed Tops Tops Field Field for for Suburban Suburban Mighty Story Goes In Lincoln Fixture The Dude, Harveys Pal and With Pleasure Meet Marsch Colt Over Hawthorne Track HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 29.— While fate dealt the 5,000 Francis S. Peabody Memorial a stunning blow when Dixianas Spy Song came down with a cough and temperature this morning and was consequently withdrawn, the mile and one-sixteenth fixture that will headline the banner Memorial Day program tomorrow retains much of its lustre and glamour, and stands out as the best race offered in Illinois this year. Spy Song was an unexpected declaration when trainer Jack Hodgins found him this morning with a slight fever and a harassing cough. With the "big horse" out, the nineteenth running of the event has attracted a well-matched field of nine, with John Marschs Mighty Story, Mrs. Al Gaals The Dude and the Maine Chance Farms Harveys Pal among the more respected sophomores, while others are Virden Ss Scotts Bank Balance, J. C. Stones Sgt. Spence, Brolite Farms With Pleasure, P. J. Valentis Seamans Pal, and Leon Tikul-skis Bobs Pick. Expect Crowd of More Than 30,000 Should the splendid weather of recent days continue, local officials, including Col. Matt J. Winn, executive director of the American Turf Association, which is conducting the local 30-day Lincoln Fields meeting, is making plans to play host to an overflow crowd of more than 30,000. In some quarters it is predicted that as many as 40,000 will jam into this popular plant. With the exception of Spy Song, the Peabody will bring together the cream of the three-year-old crop located in this area, and there is a possible chance that the ultimate victor will go on to dispute the claims of the eastern stars later in the season when they come nere for the Arlington Park and Washington Park sessions. Despite his impressive record of last season and his smart victory when he returned to competition at this track this year, Mighty Story can hardly be tabbed as a standout in the field. The smart gray colt, however, is definitely the one to beat. Trainer Burley Parke is well satisfied with his condition and will offer no excuses. The fact remains though, that the Marsch star has been bothered with unusually small, shelly feet since he was first brought to the races, and the hard track that is in prospect may impede some of his progress. If the injury responds to treatment and Gaal sends him against t the field, he looms as a mighty tough obstacle ■ in the path of Mighty Story and the ; others. Harveys Pal was the surprise entry of f the field. Although failing to capture a i stake race last year, the Maine Chance outfit held him in high regard and shipped i to Santa Anita along with Lord Boswell, . Star Pilot, Knockdown and other stars of f the organization last winter. He did not t train to the satisfaction of his conditioner and when the entourage returned East. . Harveys Pal was dropped off at Arlington Park, where he is reported to have been training well enough to get a chance B in the Peabody. He was one of the horses who miraculously escaped the horrible fire at Arlington " which snuffed the life from so many promising two-year-olds. The colt won 1 four of his five starts last year, his last t being a 10-length triumph over a good field of three-year-olds in a mile and one-sixteenth race at Pimlico last November. Jockey Ruperto Donoso will fly here to handle the son of Bull Dog — Sun Celtic, oy 1 Sun Briar. Another who will give a creditable account - of himself in the Peabody is With i Pleasure, who, while failing utterly in the e Kentucky Derby, gave a fine effort in the e 1 - i e e Derby Trial when he finished four and one-half lengths in back of Rippey and Spy Song. Assault, who later won the Derby and Preakness, was in back of the son of He Did that afternoon.
