Assault Timed in 2:32% At Belmont Stakes Route Works Last Quarter in :25s in Splendid Move for 00,000 Race BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 29. — King Ranchs Assault showed that he will be on his toes for Saturdays 00,000 Belmont Stakes when he worked the full mile and a half of that event in the good time of 2:32% this morning. The son of Bold Venture had two pacemakers with him in his extended trial and worked without blinkers, but had speed in reserve at the end of the journey. His fractions were :51%, 1:16, 1:42 and 2.071/s, which means that he stepped the last quarter in :25%. If he can do the same final quarter on Saturday, Lord Boswell, Hampden, Mist o Gold and the others will have their work cut out trying to catch him. It appears that the trio named will be Assaults chief rivals in Saturdays classic, though there may be another six or seven in the starting lineup, with Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Mahout, winner of the Peter Pan Handicap over Lord Boswell, a doubtful starter. War Watch, Mrs. A. Roberts candidate for the Belmont, turned in a clever mile trial at Belmont today. Hugh Duffords charge stepped eight panels in 1:40, which is about as well as he has ever raced. Lord Boswell carried Maine Chance Farms colors to the juvenile championship last year, in the estimate of the majority of alleged experts, which may be significant, as the leading juveniles have been remarkably successful in the Belmont, even when, as in the case of last years winner, Pavot, as he couldnt win any other race as a three-year-old. Lord Boswell, however, seems to be an "excuse" horse this year. He just failed to catch Assault in the Preak-ness, and closed in the same fashion behind Mahout in the Peter Pan. Undoubtedly he will have support on Saturdays seventy-eighth running of Americas only race run under true Derby conditions. The Belmont is the only three-year-old classic at a mile and a half, and which bars geldings, being patterned exactly after the ancient Epsom classic.
