Only Four Three-Year-Olds Have Won Suburban, Belmont BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 29. — Only four horses have been able to win both the Suburban Handicap and the Belmont Stakes during their three-year-old years. Hampton Stables African Deer was the first to accomplish the feat, taking the distance classics in 1903. August Belmonts Friar Rock, 1916; Harry Payne Whitneys Johren, 1918; and Glen Riddle Farms Crusader, 1926, were the other Suburban-Belmont doublers. Incidentally, Crusader was the last three-year-old to take major honors in the Suburban, which is being renewed tomorrow. He carried 104 pounds when he defeated American Flag in the one mile and a quarter classic, then came back to win the race again the following year, with 127 pounds up.
