Susie C. Earns Initial Purse at Hawthorne Clyde Troutt Homebred Shows Way Home to Nevermo in Sprint HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 16.— Clyde Troutts Susie C. found a field within her limitations to take top honors in the six-furlong sixth race that brought together the best contestants on the drab Friday card at this course. Scoring the first victory of her career, the daughter of Preferred and Lady Federal, under stout handling by Dale Jessop, was slightly more than one length before L. O. Handleys Nevermor as third went to the fast finishing W. A. Moore from the stable of N. L. Raffelman, who was an additional length and a half farther back in the field of ten three-year-olds. Susie C. was timed in a sluggish 1:15% and returned 3.00. Ferma had the most early speed of the band, but was unable to draw away from Betty Skelly as the latter raced lapped on the flank of the leader down the back-stretch and around the turn. Susie C. was not hurried early and Jessop was content to move into closer contention gradually, but when turned for home he asked the eventual winner for speed. Responding readily, Susie C. spurted into command, and both Ferma and Betty Skelly chucked it when headed. Susie C. drew clear in the stretch, but a new threat loomed as Nevermo, who had been far back early, finished with a bold rush, and W. A. Moore, who had been even Continued on Page Thirty -Four Susie C. The crowd numbered 10,700 and the track had dried out quickly following overnight rains to be fast. The program was an ordinary one, as the better-grade horses were in idleness in preparation for the sparkling program arranged for Saturday. The fifth race, that saw a dozen ,000 claimers engaged at six furlongs, resulted in a tight fit when Tom Calumets Army Glider drove up on the inside to earn a nose verdict over W. T. Beezleys Try Flight after the latter had taken a brief lead in the late stretch between calls. The favored Delorah, from the stable of Kirkpatrick and Turner, was third, one length farther back, after racing forwardly all the way. The victory of the winner was his first this year and he paid 9.
