Counter-Totalisator Board Installed at River Downs RIVER DOWNS, Cincinnati, Ohio, May 16. — The racing season will get under way here Saturday, May 24, when the local River Downs track inaugurates its annual 44-day spring meeting. Horses have been arriving daily and more than 500 already are on the grounds. River Downs has undergone numerous improvements for the coming season and sufficient stall space will be available for a record number of stables. Since the completion of last years sport, a counter-totalisator board has been installed marking the first time an electrical odds board is to be used in Ohio. The grandstand and clubhouse also has been reroofed and the racing strip has undergone complete resurfacing. General manager Bernard Rand stated that several other planned improvements for the beautification of the River Downs plant could not be accomplished this year, due to material shortages government restrictions, but will be added as soon as possible. Racing secretary and handicapper Lewis J. Giles is expected this week along with several key members of his staff and Giles will supervise stabling of the numerous outfits that are expected to arrive during the next few days. Giles will be a newcomer to the River Downs official colony having previously officiated in the West.
