Risolater Narrowly Whips Be Faithful Earns Nose Verdict in Nimba To Defeat Shaffer Miss Again First Flight, Withdrawn From Race, in Unimpressive Mile and Sixteenth Work BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 16. — G. H. "Pete" Bost wicks Risolater thrilled a crowd of 23,654, most of whom had turned out to see the champion First Flight make her debut, which did not materialize, when she drove to a nose victory over Mrs. E. E. D. Shaffers Be Faithful in the featured Nimba Handicap. Mill River Stables Miss Grillo, who had trailed for nearly a mile, finished a length and a half batk and four lengths before C. V. Whitneys Recce, while Mrs. W. Plunket Stewarts Rytina completed the small field, just a neck farther back at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. A solid favorite, Risolater returned .50 and was timed in 1:45 under a slashing ride by Ted Atkinson. Immediately after the race, it was announced that First Flight would work out. A few minutes later C. V. Whitneys queen of last yeajs juveniles came out on the track in company with the four-year-old handicap horse, Bright Sword. The two broke from the gate at the mile and a furlong pole, with First Flight taking a couple of lengths at the start, but being quickly joined by the older horse. Bright Sword Outshines Running Mate The pair ran as a team, with Bright Sword clearly dominating the filly as they stepped fractions of :23%, :46%, 1:00, 1:12%, 1 :412a and 1 : 49 Vs. Through the stretch, the exercise rider on Bright Sword, who was on the inside, literally had to swing on his mount to enable First Flight to finish in front under a mild drive. It was not an impressive trial by any means, and the fans should be abundantly grateful to owner C. V. Whitney for scratching her from the Nimba, for which she would have been the public choice on the strength of her great reputation. While it was announced that this mile and a sixteenth workout was in preparation for next Tuesdays Coaching Club American Oaks, First Flight hardly seemed ready for such a task. To return to the Nimba, Rytina and Recce alternated in the lead during the run down the far side, with Be Faithful joining them at the far turn and taking command. Risolater was never far away, but Miss Grillo was some 15 lengths in the rear. Rytina regained the lead briefly on the far turn, leading Be Faithful by a length with Risolater only a head away and three lengths before the fading Recce. At this stage, Miss Grillo began to close gradually. Rytina stopped between the turns and Be Faithful moved to the front, followed by Risolater on the outside, while Miss Grillo began to move up, but apparently tried to bear out on the final bend and then ducked in when McCreary used his whip to keep her straight. Be Faithful and Risolater fought a desperate duel all through the stretch, with Atkinson making full use of his whip. The daughter of Isolater gave the impression at the sixteenth pole that she was going to draw away, but Be Faithful came on again in the final strides and Risolater scored by the narrowest possible margin.
