Dark Dark Jungle Jungle Takes Takes Steger Steger With With Ease; Ease; Tailspin Tailspin Charges Charges to to Peter Peter Pan Pan Upset Upset Brabancon Places In Belmont Stake Successful Greentree Colt Holds Length Advantage as Odds-On Phalanx Is Third BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 24. Greentree Stables Tailspin stunned a Saturday throng of 41,396 patrons, when he charged through the stretch to capture the 5,000 Peter Pan Handicap at Belmont Park by a length from Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon, while C. V. Whitneys Phalanx, the odds-on favorite, was another length away and a scant nose before Robert L. Gerrys Young Peter, at the end of the mile and a furlong. Tailspin completed a "triple" for Ted Atkinson, who had ridden the same stables Bambuco in the first race and Twin Oaks Farms Glad Time in the sprint preceding the Peter Pan. Atkinson made it four winners for the afternoon, in which he accepted six mounts, when he guided Stage Bond, the rank outsider in the four-horse field, to a three-quarter length victory over the favored Hachazo. Atkinsons Big Day in Saddle All four of Atkinsons successful mounts were outsiders. Bambuco returned 7.20; Glad Time, 2.40; Tailspin, 7.80, and Stage Bond, 7.30. Incidentally, Bambuco and Tailspin were beaten favorites in their last outings. The time of 1 :50 for the mile and a furlong was more than two seconds slower than the track mark, but a passable race. Phalanx had no apparent excuse, other than his top weight of 126 pounds. The runner-up in the Derby and close follower of Faultless and On Trust in the Preakness, was attempting to concede 17 pounds to Tailspin, nine to Brabancon and gave 13 to Young Peter. Nine Belmont candidates started in the Peter Pan today and most of them eliminated themselves from serious consideration. C. V. Whitneys Phalanx, who finished in front of Faultless in the Derby and was soundly beaten by the Calumet colt in the Preakness, probably earned a chance to start in the classic event by finishing reasonably well to be third under top weight Continued on Page Three Tailspin Charges to Upset Accounting in Peter Pan Continued from Page One of 126 pounds, the same burden he must pick up Saturday. Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon added one more to his collection of seconds, leading Phalanx a length at the wire, but was receiving nine pounds and will have to meet Faultless and Phalanx at level weights in the mile and a half event. By winning the Peter Pan, Tailspin may also have earned a chance to start in the Belmont, and the son of Blenheim n., from the stakes mare Tangled, finished his race in a style suggesting the longer journey will not bother him, but he, too, must pick up much more weight. Of the others in the Peter Pan, only Young Peter raced well enough to deserve a chance in the Belmont. This colt was forced to change his line in the stretch run, which cost him third money, and was sluggish leaving the gate. Basil James sent Brabancon to the front at the start of the Peter Pan, followed by Stage Kid, Contest, Vacance, -Hyblaze, Cornish Knight, Tailspin, Our Tommy, Phalanx, Young Peter and Riskolater. The latter two were very slow leaving the gate. Hyblaze, who doesnt usually care to go to the front, soon took a slight lead over Brabancon, while Cornish Knight was a fairly close third in the run down the far side, with Vacance close at hand and Contest daylight away before a compact group. Phalanx was beginning to work his way between horses and was not too far away. Brabancon regained the lead rounding the far turn, as Hyblaze began to tire and Phalanx was little more than a length away in fifth place, with Cornish Knight and Tailspin immediately before him, while Young Peter was saving ground along the rail and coming into contention. The Chrysler colt continued to lead into the stretch, but Atkinson drove Tailspin up on the inside as Young Peter went to the outside, then had to go in again as Phalanx began to bear out in front of him. Tailspin was drawing away under strong urging in the final yards, while Brabancon held on with his usual gameness and Phalanx just managed to stave off the belated rush of Young Peter.
