Only Nose Off Choice as Combs Homebred Wins by Fiye at Hawthorne HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 24. Lucas B. Combs Dark Jungle, a four-year-old son of He Did and Dark River, romped to an easy victory here in the sixteenth running of the 0,000 Steger Handicap. Alertly ridden by Steve Brooks, the Combs colt coasted to the finish of the six-and-one-half-furlong feature, fiye lengths before John Marschs Mighty Story, who was the choice for the headliner." Just a nose back of Mighty Story, Mrs. John S. Letel-liers Jack S. L finished willingly to earn the minor portion of the purse, while Shady Brook Farms Merrymarch lasted to save fourth money in the field of eight starters. Shouldering 119 pounds, which burden was four pounds less than that of the top-weighted Mighty Story, Dark Jungle sped the Steger distance over the firm footing, in 1:19 y5, thus chalking up the best time for six and one-half furlongs at the current Lincoln Fields meeting. Second choice in the "tote" to Mighty Story, the Combs star paid .60, straight, and picked up ,725 for his owner, the latter figure representing the winners end of the Steger spoils. Dark Jungle, who won the Churchill Downs Handicap at the Derby oval before his shipment to Chicago, now has amassed 6,450 thus far this season. Jack S. L. First in Motion Starter Ruby White sent the Steger band away from the stalls in good order and Jack S. L. was first to show in front, with Mighty Story next, and the ultimate victor third. Before going a furlong, Dark Jungle assumed command, and the Combs colt never relinquished the lead once he was in front, moving along steadily to the stretch, while Albulil raced in nearest pursuit. Turning for home, Brooks mildly roused Dark Jungle and his mount responded with a fine burst of speed, which was easily able to hold his rivals safe and the victor was merely galloping as he swept by the finish. Mighty Story, who moved up boldly during the drive, was rather over-confidently handled near the wire, and he just managed to save the place award by a short margin over the fast finishing Jack S. L., who came from fifth place in the drive. Merrymatch turned in a good effort to be fourth, while Bull Play failed to stay after a flash of early speed. Old Kentuck never was a dangerous threat, and. Albulil could do no better than seventh, after he had engaged Dark Jungle to the stretch. Despite cool and threatening weather, an enthusiastic crowd of 20,716 patrons witnessed the program of half-holiday sport at this rambling plant. The pace quickened slightly as they neared the far turn, with Dodson asking for added momentum. However, he could not draw off from Royal Lover and they continued their head and head struggle. It was after leaving the backstretch that Jessop made his bid and Donor responded gallantly. He swung to the outside to avoid any possible trouble and as they darted into the stretch, he swept into the lead. His margin was only a half a length at the eighth pole, but in the next 70 yards he opened up by a couple of lengths, at which time Jessop merely eased him along while the others were under heavy pressure in the fight for the place. While Donors performance was creditable, the race turned in by Royal Lover was totally unexpected. He was coupled with his stablemate, Kerry, who was expected by patrons to make the. main bid for victory. Royal Lover had started but once before, that being last August at Saratoga, when he was beaten well off. Today he either made or forced all the pace, then hung on gamely, as if he is a colt of better-than-average quality.
