Turbine Betters Record at Havre Covers Mile and Eighth in 1 :49 to Gain Nose Score Over Blue Yonder in Thriller HAVRE DE GRACE, Md May 24. Turbine, a Maryland-bred son of Burning Star Lucky Jean, who races for the estate of Mrs. H. Lebowitz, established a new mile and a furlong track record of 1:49 here l this afternoon when he sizzled to a spectacular nose triumph in the thirty-sixth running of the Havre de Grace Handicap. Patiently and expertly ridden by the veteran Mike Basile, Turbine rallied under extreme pressure and, after giving way to Mrs. E. H. Augustus Blue Yonder inside the sixteenth pole, outfinished that one just at the wire. Blue Yonder was a length and one-half in front of Miss Margie Fishers rapid beginner, Shivaree. The winner, a :00 second choice with the throng of approximately 15,000 sweltering fans, bettered a track mark which was established in 1933 when Osculator won tihs event. Jockey Bobby Martin clinched saddle honors for the afternoon when he scored his third success astride Antonio Bonuo-mos Relious, in the one mile and a quarter seventh race. Relious, the second winner for the stable, also led from the final turn to the wire and paid 0.60, War Watch Pinched Back The field left starter Jim Miltons barrier in perfect alignment, but War Watch was pinched back slightly as the rank outsider, Shivaree, attained the lead in the run to the first turn. Christiana Stables Alexis, an .entry with Service Pilot, dogged Shivaree until the five-furlong pole, where Henri Mora disposed of that one and began steadying his charge. Turbine, in the meantime, had been hustled into a forward position and was being rated along in the third slot, with the favored Brown Mogul back in eighth position. The first noticeable change in the running order did not come until midway of the final turn, with jockey Martin picking his spots carefully with Blue Yonder and moving into a menacing position. Alexis was the first to give way, shortening his stride as the field passed the quarter pole. Shivaree, whom many had expected to wilt early under a sizzling pace which saw the first half-mile completed in :47 and the six furlongs traversed in 1:11, showed unexpected determination and was still sailing along the head end. Turbine charged to the leader as the field approached the furlong marker and Blue Yonder continued his determined challenge along the inside. Shivaree faltered ever so little in the concluding test and Blue Yonder moved on the inside of Turbine to take a slight advantage at the sixteenth pole. Turbine was not to be denied, however, and he proved the gamer of the two while earning the 9,700 by a very slim margin.
