. , Star Reward, Balheirn Vie in Rushaway LUCAS B. COMBS His homebred, Dark Jungle, was an easy winner of the Steger Handicap, feature attraction on the Lincoln Fields-at-Hawthorne program. Both Are Peabody Memorial Hopefuls Jacks Jill and Harriet Sue Among Twelve in Filly-Mare Event at Hawthorne Today HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 24. The 1947 Lincoln Fields-at-Hawthorne meeting goes into its third week Monday, and excellent sport is scheduled for the next six days period. The 5,000 Francis S. Peabody Memorial, one mile and one-sixteenth test for three-year-olds, is to be decided on next Friday, Memorial Day, and a crack field from the age division is expected to go postward in the fixture. On the following Saturday the 0,000 La Salle Handicap, one mile and three-sixteenths for three-year-olds and upward, is to headline the half-holiday bill. The Peabody Memorial will have its eighteeenth renewal and 18 top class thoroughbreds are nominated for the stake. Calumet Farm named Faultless, Fervent and Master for the holiday feature, but, of course, Faultless will be engaged in the 00,000 Belmont on May 31, and he will not fill the local engagement. Fervent, who will arrive at Arlington Park on Monday, may be far enough along in his training to accept in the Peabody, while Master, winner of two races during the Kentucky spring season, is a probable Peabody starter. Raced Well in Kentucky Derby Other outstanding performers named for the Memorial Day stake are Dixianas fleet homebred colt, Star Reward; John Marschs Preoccupy; Murlogg Farms Balheim; Mrs. Albert Sabaths Say Blue; Wm. M. Peaveys Jett-Jett, and Joseph A. Goodwins home-breds, Song Sparrow and Ballas Girl. Star Reward, who turned in a splendid effort in the seventy-third running of the Kentucky Derby, is entered in the Rushaway Purse, one mile and one-sixteenth feature for three-year-olds on Mondays card. Balheim, a very good "off" track performer, also is named for the Rushaway, the Murlogg colt and Star Reward will undoubtedly use the Monday headliner as a preparatory move for their important Peabody engagements. The Rushaway also drew J. H. Miles High Kick, H. and S. Stables Omaha Bound, Sandy Strand Stables Shadow Shot, and Frederick W. Hoopers Kays Love. Shadow Shot raced rather well in Florida before shipment north, while Kays Love was an impressive winner here yesterday in the six-furlong Viscounty Purse, and the manner in which she attained major honors, suggests that she will a keen factor in Mondays principal offerings. Under the allowance conditions of the Rushaway, Star Reward is the high-weight under 118 pounds, Shadow Shot and Balheim are to carry 115 pounds. High Kick and Omaha Bound get in under 109 pounds and Kays Love is to shoulder a feathery 105 pounds, with the apprentice allowance claimed for the Hooper miss. Hawthorne Gold Cup Victress While the Rushaway Purse is generally rated as the best offering on the Monday bill, the Princess Doreen, a six-furlong sprint for fillies and mares, four-year-olds and upward, probably will attract as much or more attention from Chicago turf followers. Included in the field of 12 named for the Princess Doreen is the crack filly, Jacks Jill, who not only won the 1946 running of the Hawthorne Gold Cup, but achieved top honors in several other major engagements last year. Jacks Jill, recently arrived here with the Joseph A. Goodwin stable from Churchill Downs, is to make her second start of the year in Mondays dash. Mrs. Hyman Fried-bergs Harriet Sue is another clever filly named for the Princess Doreen, and she will be making her seasonal debut in the filly and mare number. Enchanting, Peri-air, Be A Bee, Mannequin, Nellie Weed, May Fly and Corina Lark are among others expected to contest the twin feature. Four-year-olds and upward will meet in the six and one-half furlongs opener, three-year-olds are to clash in the second event at a similar distance, and two-year-old fillies .are to contest the five furlongs Kathleen Purse, third number on the Monday card. Four-year-olds and upward are eligible to the six furlongs fourth, the one mile and one-sixteenth seventh, and the one mile and one furlong "nightcap." The latter three races drew capacity fields, all of which appear equally matched.
