War Special and Manitowoc Successful In Divided Sprint Offering at Detroit Beezley Colt Wrests Lead From Tangled Miss During Stretch Run in First Half FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 27. War Special, an invader from the West Coast, who races for Mrs. Earl H. Beezley, turned in a convincing performance, to account for the six-furlong third race, an allowance contest divided and offered as the third and fourth races to provide the best of the early races here today. The divisions were fashioned for three-year-olds, exclusively, and War Special, a non-winner who had started only twice, was slightly more than a length before Leo Caillouettes speedy but unruly Tangled Miss, as that, pacemaker led in the favored Delhannah from the stable of W. A. Delaney by two lengths. Willie Swigart, also from the West, rode the winner, who returned 8.80, as he was timed in 1:13, over a track that had become good for this race. Tangled Miss went into immediate command when the start came and, drawing clear, raced before Delhannah, with Merit next in line before the eventual winner. This order of the leaders was maintained until the early stretch was reached, where Merit was through and Wa,r Special moved into third place. Delhannah was asked for speed in an effort to reduce the advantage of Tangled Miss, who was hugging the rail, and the favorite was able to move into closer competition, but Tangled Miss held on stubbornly. At the furlong marker it became evident that War Special was to play a prominent part in the finish, for when roused he unleashed a burst of speed that saw him running over his rivals as the finish line was crossed. Cloudy weather and a slow track greeted the estimated 9,000 patrons who turned out for the sport and, while the track improved to be rated good for the third race, light showers began to fall as the fourth race was run. L. J. Hollenbachs Manitowoc toyed with his eight opponents in the second division to lope home with an eight-length advantage over Be Like Polly, who represented Miss B. Rose. Third went to Watch Sonny, from the establishment of C. Williamson, who weakened from futile efforts to overhaul the pace-setting winner and surrendered the place award to Be Like Polly in the final furlong. Stoutly handled by jockey Willard Cook, C. F. Martins Hash Brown was hustled up quickly to oust the favored Voyageur from command leaving the backstretch in the first race and then held sway to be two lengths before Voyageur at the end of the six furlongs. Finishing gamely after racing evenly, De Sota was third, just a neck away. The four-year-old winner was coupled in the mutuel field and was scoring her first victory. She paid 2.00.
