Hornpipe in Front Throughout Sprint Blue Border Is Beaten Neck To Become Fourth Odds-On Favorite in Row to Lose BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 27. Glen Riddle Farms Hornpipe led throughout the featured Ballot Handicap at Belmont Park today, reaching the end of the six furlongs a neck before Green-tree Stables Blue Border, the odds-on choice. Blue Border was the fourth straight odds-on favorite to fail the majority of the 23,021 that passed through the turnstiles, Darjeeling, Blunt Remark and the Brookmeade Stable entry of Inseperable and Chains having been backed to less than even money in the preceding races. Like Blue Border, Darjeeling and Inseperable finished second, while Blunt Remark landed such show money as there was in the fourth race. C. V. Whitneys Bastogne finished third in the Ballot, three lengths back of the runner-up and a length and a half before Wheatley Stables Keynote, who completed the small field. Though he had won three of his last five starts and had only 106 pounds to carry against 123 on Blue Border, Hornpipe paid .10 after running the distance in 1:11. Keynote was first out of the stalls in the Ballot, but was quickly passed by Hornpipe, who was hustled up by Bobby Per-mane along the inside rail. Bastogne was third away and Blue Border left the gate slowly and, with Atkinson apparently taking up as though the horse had stumbled, the favorite was rushed up on the outside and was in second place rounding the far turn, apparently having the race at his mercy, but Hornpipe had something left and came into the stretch more than a length to the fore. Runner-Up Gaining With Every Stride As the leaders straightened away for the run down the home lane, Hornpipe drifted out slightly and Atkinson cut sharply to the inside with Blue Border, who was gaining with every stride, but just could not get up in time. Bastotgne ran an even race for his share, while Keynote, as usual, stopped badly. Greentrees Star Bout outfinished Brookmeade Stables Inseperable to capture the Seaford Purse that preceded -the feature, drawing away.- A. G. Vanderbilts News-weekly, who was bumped by Inseperable a stride or two after the start, was a distant third before C. V. Whitneys Mackinaw, who also lugged to his left during the run down the straightaway. Star Bout was ridden by Ted Atkinson and paid 1.80 after running five furlongs in the good time of :57. John C. Clarks Vortex cast himself in the starting gate and was ordered withdrawn, all wagers on the colt being refunded. Bayard Sharps Tide Rips earned his chance to start in the 00,000 Belmont Stakes on Saturday when he scored his second straight victory by breezing home two lengths before Frank Frankels Flashco in the Lazzarone Purse that followed the feature. King Ranchs Contest, who was also considered a Belmont possibility, virtually eliminated himself from Saturdays stake by finishing a tiring third, a length back of Flashco and four lengths before W. Goadby Loews Parhelion. Tide Rips ran the mile and a sixteenth in the fair time of 1,:44, then went on to work out a mile and a quarter in 2:05. Heavily favored on the strength of his last clever victory here, Tide Rips paid .00. Charley Givens, who was in the saddle today, has drawn the mount in the Belmont Stakes.
