Sugar Sugar Beet Beet Whips Whips Bull Bull Play Play by by Head; Head; Rytina Rytina Provides Provides Top Top Flight Flight Surprise Surprise Stewart Homebred" Leads Throughout Miss Grillo Second After Belated Rush at Belmont; Bridal Flower Runs Last BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 28. Mrs. W. Plunket Stewarts Rytina took the track at the start of the 0,000 Top Flight Handicap at Belmont Park today and amazed the majority of the crowd of 21,810 by staying the entire mile and a sixteenth to score by a length over Mill River Stables Miss Grillo, who closed with a belated rush, while Mrs. E. E. D. Shaffers Be Faithful was a neck farther back and a length before Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilts Nomadic. King Ranchs Bridal Flower, the favorite, was last of the dozen starters to finish, while Joe W. Browns Dorothy Brown stumbled when caught in a tight jam near the head of the stretch and spilled jockey Eric Guerin, who was unhurt, by some miracle. Ted Atkinson hustled Rytina along from the start and held the Milkman filly together well in the final drive. She returned 7.60, 5.80 and 0.40 across the board after getting the distance in the sparkling time of 1:43. Setting all her own pace, Rytina went the half in :45, six furlongs in 1:10 and the mile in 1:36, which is as fast as horses have been traveling at this meeting. Meadow Brook to War Battle Kent Millers War Battle scored a popular victory in the 5,000 Meadow Brook Steeplechase Handicap, final through-the-field fixture of the meeting, drawing away in the stretch to reach the end of the about two and a half miles a dozen lengths before Brookmeade Stables Fleettown, who had passed him at the far turn the second time around. Thomas T. Motts Floating Isle was another 12 lengths away and just a nose before Mrs. F. Ambrose Clarks Ray-lywn. The small field was completed by G. H. Bostwicks Army Power, and Elkridge, Millers champion jumper of 1946, who at least schooled well, jumping in a sanitary manner far behind the field and on the Continued, on Page Six MRS. W. P. However, as War Battle won the race for the backers of the entry, there were no complaints. War Battle returned .30. While War Date was first out of the Cassidy Gate, Rytina quickly took over the lead, followed by Be Faithful as War Date dropped back. Recce was close at hand, followed by Half After and Bridal Flower as they moved down the backstretch, while Miss Grillo was trailing the field and racing very wide, appearing to be almost against the hedge on the far side of the track. Rytina widened her lead to some three lengths rounding the far turn, with Be Faithful, Nomadic, Recce, Half After and War Date in a compact group as Miss Grillo began to move up fast on the outside and Bridal Flower dropped out of contention abruptly. Rytina saved ground curving into the stretch, coming into the home lane a length and a half before Nomadic, who made a brief bid that carried her past Be Faithful momentarily, while Merry Lass also came into the picture for an instant. Miss Grillo was literally flying on the outside, however, and picked up horses with every stride, but obviously could not catch the winner, who dug in gamely under punishment. Be Faithful came again a trifle at the nd to take third money from the tiring Nomadic, while War Date ran an even race to be fifth a narrow margin before Sweet Caprice, Elpis, Merry Lass, Half After, Recce and Bridal Flower finished in that order. The movies indicated that Dorothy Brown ran up on the heels of Bridal Flower as that filly was stopping, causing the spill. There was no apparent excuse for Bridal Flower, who appeared sound after the race, but simply "stopped all over" when in fairly close quarters nearing the far turn. Rytina, who was in with the feather of 104 pounds, was scoring the most important success of her career and added 8,-550 to her earnings". In last years Black Helen Handicap at a mile and a furlong she was beaten only a neck by Miss Grillo, who went postward at 13 to 5 today, while G. P. "Maje" Odoms charge was almost 23 to 1.
