Sugar Sugar Beet Beet Whips Whips Bull Bull Play Play by by Head; Head; Rytina Rytina Provides Provides Top Top Flight Flight Surprise Surprise Closes With Rush To Take Bien Fait Luginbuel Gelding Gains , Fifth Win of Season Oyer Slow Strip at Hawthorne HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 28. Finishing strongly under a good ride by apprentice Harold Featherston, Sugar Beet, a four-year-old gelded son of Flying Scot and Sugar Bird, carried Mrs. Reed Lugin-buels colors to a game and impressive victory here today in the Bien Fait Handicap. Closing very fast during the stretch run of the six-furlong feature, Sugar Beet was along in the last strides to take a head decision over Walter W. Jones favored Bull Play, who was second by three and one-half lengths before D. C. Wilhelms Bubbling Easy. Shady Brook Farms Sand-slinger, away very slowly, finished well enough to earn fourth money in the field of seven starters. Shouldering 108 pounds, which impost was nine pounds lighter than that carried by Joenaces Stable topweighted Juke Box, Sugar Beet, a clever "off" track performer, sped the three-quarters over the slow footing in 1:15. Lightly regarded in the wagering, the Luginbuel gelding was good . for 0.60 in the straight "tote" pool, after winning his fifth start in eleven starts this year. Lead Changes Several Times The lead changed several times in the Bien Fait running, Bubbling Easy going to the front at the start with Petsome displacing her before going a quarter mile. Bull Play was next to take over the pace-making task, and he forged into command approaching the stretch. Bull Play pulled himself up slightly during the stretch run, and Bubbling Easy then showed on top passing the furlong pole. Sugar Beet, who had to be taken up sharply when crowded when leaving the upper turn, moved along steadily when clear and then began his victorious bid at the final turn. Responding readily to Featherstons urging, Sugar Beet wore down Bubbling Easy and Bull Play in that order, and he appeared ready to increase his winning margin at the final marker. Temperatures in the thirties and at the threat of more rainfall held attendance down to 7,128 regulars for the mid-week sport. Those braving the raw weather, however, were treated to some good racing, despite the bad overhead conditions and several choices reached the winners circle on the slow strip. Thomas Piatts homebred Evident, a well ; conformed son of Transmute and Plain-view, whipped seven other three-year-olds in the six-furlong Princeton Purse. Smartly ridden by Steve Brooks, who was complet- ing a saddle double, the Piatt colt won by a length and one-half over Clyde Troutts Busy Pony, second by two and one-half 1 lengths in advance of W. F. Mannaghs ; Continued on Page Two "Sugar Beet Whips Bull Play By Head Margin in Bien Fait Continued from Page One Liteco. Woolford Farms Big Wig, one of the Princeton top-rated starters, wound up fourth in the sprint. Evident raced the three-quarters over the soft footing in 1:16, and, as the choice, paid 2 to 1 straight. Brooks gave Miss Show Me a hustling ride in the six and one-half -furlong opener, and the N. Christie mare scored a neck victory over Bolo Prince, who reached the lead during the stretch run. Zestful turned in a sharp effort to be third in the field of 12 platers. Army Glider, one of the better regarded starters, wound up fourth. W. W. Guernseys Maihigh, handled by Willie Garner, drove to a half-length accounting in the second, also at six and one-half furlongs. Maihigh entered the stretch with a clear lead, but he had to be briskly ridden during the drive to withstand Khamseens Boy, who finished second by a length and one-quarter over Puffed Up, favorite in the seven-horse band. Mrs. M. Swigerts Aunt Drum won her third straight purse of the current Lincoln Fields session today. Aunt Drum easily bested four other three-year-olds in the six-furlong third race, coasting to a three-length verdict over Stella Snyder, second by five lengths over the favored Confirmation.
