Six Handicap Offerings Programmed For Holiday Week-End at Detroit Oval Expect Sir Sprite to Seek t Second Straight Success in Col. Alger Event Tomorrow FAIR GROUNDS, Detroit, Mich., May 28. Detroits best handicap performers will be in action over the Memorial Day week-end as racing secretary Charles -F. Henry has arranged six handicap events for the Friday and Saturday programs. As a result, capacity crowds of 25,000 are expected to be on hand at the Fair Grounds on both days. The top event of this star-studded arrangement will be the 0,000 Col. Alger Memorial Handicap, over a mile and one-sixteenth on Friday. This will be the thirteenth running of the Alger, and O. F. Woodwards Sir Sprite, 1946 winner, will be back to try for the big end of the purse again. No horse has ever won the Alger twice. Sir Sprite will have plenty of opposition. T. D. Buhls Sweep Swinger, winner of the ,000 Man o War Handicap on opening day, will likely be entered. He nipped Sir Sprite in the Man o War after a stiff stretch duel. Other contenders include Kingarvie, R. S. McLaughlins Canadian star, who won the King Edward Gold Cup at Woodbine after a successful winter campaign which concluded with a score in Gulfstreams 5,000 Hallandale Handicap. It may be that De-troiters will favor Kingarvie over both Sir Sprite and Sweep Swinger. Not to be overlooked as contenders in the Alger are such others as Bill Ross, from the Markey and Bohn stable; Dave Fergusons Bob Murphy, Mrs. E. H. Beezleys Favorito; Boy-Plin, from the P. R. and H. L. Hinton stable, and B. H. Wises Dimout. Also, on Fridays Memorial Day card, will be the ,000 Decoration Day Handicap, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds. Imperator, the crack McLaughlin sprinter, may be favorite, although such : ; others as Johns Pride, owned by J. A. Kin-ard, Jr., Al Kellmans Eva T., and Mrs. Norman Hernandez Gallant Foot are likely to start. Saturday will find the older sprinters going six furlongs in the 0,000 Cadillac Handicap. This means that Many Lands, Roi Rouge, Diamond Dick, Dimit and Air Sailor, among others, probably will be in the big contest. Also scheduled Saturday is : the ,000 Black Gold Handicap, a race of a mile and one-sixteenth for three-year-olds. In addition Secretary Henry has scheduled two handicaps for two-year-olds. The ,000 Freshman Handicap for colts and geldings is set for Friday, while the ,000 Debutante Handicap, for fillies, will go Saturday. Both are five-furlong sprints.
