Five May Oppose Assault in Suburban King Ranch Star Staunch Favorite Faultless Also Regarded as Odds-On Choice to Capture Saturdays Belmont Stakes BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., x May 28. A field of six of the best handicap horses in training is in prospect for Fridays 0,000 Suburban and a slightly larger band is expected to go postward in the 00,000 Belmont Stakes the following day, as the Westchester Racing Association stages the biggest week-end of racing of the eastern season. Somewhat more than 100,000 patrons are expected to turn out on the two afternoons to see King Ranchs champion Assault in the Suburban and Calumet Farms Preakness and Withers winner, Faultless, in the Belmont. Both Assault and Faultless loom odds-on choices, but will almost certainly know that they have been to the races when the dust settles after these two traditional fixtures. Racing Secretary John B. Campbell expects Assault, who will have to pick up top weight of 130 pounds in the mile and a quarter Suburban, will be opposed by Mrs. Ethel D. Jacobs Stymie, 126; Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords Natchez, 120; Arnold Hangers Rico Monte, 119; W. L. Branns Gallorette, 116, and Richard N. Ryans Talon, 112. Luro Will Saddle Entry Rico Monte and Talon will be coupled, both being trained by Horatio Luro, with Ruperto Donoso riding Rico Monte and Doug Dodson to pilot Talon. The South American pair has showed enough above the equator to be exceedingly dangerous at the weights. Stymie and Assault are second and third, respectively, behind Whirlaway in the worlds money-winning roster and are breathing on "Mr. Longtails" neck in the race for the money crown. Stymie was galloped once around Jamaica this morning with a light boy up, then taken back to the barn and the vastly heavier "cream puff," his regular exercise rider, got a saddle and took the stallion out for a breezing mile in 1:39. The fractions were :46 and 1 :13. Stymie has been knocking on the door in the last two editions of the Suburban, finishing second to Devil Diver in 1945 and third behind Armed and Reply Paid last year. Armed, incidentally, is the only prominent handicap horse absent from the Suburban with the possible exception of the Santa Anita Handicap winner, Olhaverry. Gallorette, who will be ridden by Job Dean Jessop on Memorial Day, went a nimble five furlongs on the main track at Belmont this morning, getting the distance in :59, handily, after fractions of :34 and :46. Opposition to Faultless The opposition to Faultless in the mile and a half Belmont is expected to come from C. V. Whitneys Phalanx and Khyber Pass, who will be ridden by Ruperto Donoso and Eddie Arcaro, respectively; Bayard Sharps vastly improved Tide Rips, a winner here yesterday, who will have Charley Givens in the saddle; Walter P. Chryslers Brabancon, who has compiled an impressive number of seconds in rich stakes; Green-tree Stables Tailspin, winner of the Peter Pan Handicap;- Marlet Stables Royal Lover, who placed behind Donor in the Yankee Handicap last week, and E. P. Taylors Cornish Knight. The National Stallion will also be renewed on the Widener straightaway Saturday, with a return meeting between B. F. Whitakers My Request and Maine Chance Farms Royal Blood in prospect. My Request went an impressive five furlongs in :59 this morning while Royal Blood worked well with blinkers a couple of days : ago. Two features adorn tomorrows program. The Bigonet Purse for three-year-old fillies at one mile will be run as the sixth event for a ,500 prize and is preceded by the ,000 Discount Handicap at six furlongs. The Bigonet is distinguished by the presence of King Ranchs Bee Ann Mac, winner of last years Selima Stakes. This half sister to Bimelech originally went to Ogden . Phipps in the draw that followed the Brad-r ley sale, but was acquired by Robert Kle-r berg in a swap for a yearling by Challedon from Bird Flower, who is now training 5 under the name of Flitabout. Bee Ann Mac, who has been training well, will be r opposed by Dorothy B. Jr., winner of her , last start; Halsgal, Mother, By Sea, Soviet - and Arctos. t Only five have been named for the Dis- 1 count, which is headed by Glen Riddles War Trophy and C. T. Chenerys Horn- 2 beam, a pair of agile sprinters. The others 5 are the capable Windfields, Speeding Home - and Quick Reward. This promises to be a i wide open dash.
