Darby D-Day on Front End Throughout Sprint James Campaigner Draws Off to Clear Accounting Over Lanlast ATLANTIC CITY, Mays Landing, N. J., May 28. Darby D-Day, racing in the colors of Mrs. Harry James, showed a return to his best form this afternoon to capture the W. Freeland Kendrick Purse, a class D allowance sprint that brought out a field of a half dozen speed specialists. Neglected in the wagering at odds of 8 to 1, the gelded son of Omaha or Blue Larkspur Wise Ally led the entire trip and, although both Lanlast, who held on longest to finish second, two and a half lengths to the rear, and the favored Epinaza both carried the fight to Mrs. James gelding, he was not to be caught. Riar- Red, Lanlasts stablemate, made a rather belated bid in the stretch, finishing third in front of Danny J., while Epinaza, done after a half-mile, flattened out badly in the drive after the one strong challenge. Hadrian, a Roman colt, earned his first victory in five starts this season, annexing the seventh, a nine-furlong test, at the expense of Houlgate, from the strongly favored S. Jacobs entry, and Justa Note, the latter a nose to the good of Houlgates stablemate, Dolly Varden. Hadrian, quick to find his racing legs, was first out of the gate, opened up an ever-increasing lead over Justa Note and Sir Sing, while Houlgate gradually closed in on this pair, but could never get within striking distance of the winning leader. Stout, on Houlgate, drove hard, disposing of Justa Note as they curved for home, but he not only could not cut down Hadrians commanding lead, he was farther to the rear of the winner at the finish than at the quarter-pole. Hadrians eight-length score was accomplished in 1:53, and jockey W. Balzaretti was looking over his shoulder for competition from the middle of the final bend.
