. Nell A. Gives Apprentice Petrin First Saddle Success of Career Budding Rider Drives Flack t Mare Home in Clear Before Ogham, Tim B. at Suffolk SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 28. Raymond Petrin, an 18-year-old youngster from Lonsdale, R. I., experienced the greatest thrill that can come to a budding apprentice when he rather expertly guided Mrs. C. Flacks Nell A. to a convincing triumph in the Cranberry Purse here this afternoon. It was Petrins maiden-breaking venture, and his mount gave evidence of being far superior to her foes asshe swept into the lead with a rush and then drew off to score by a length and three-quarters. Petrin, who was born on St. Patricks day, flaunted silks this afternoon that bore a green shamrock on the back. He exer- cised excellent judgment throughout, and the fact that he saved several lengths by stealing through on the inside made his triumph impressive. Mort Stuarts steady campaigner, Ogham, showed his usual good performance and, while no match for the winner, proved best of the others to take the place from Mt. Desert Stables Tim B while J. L. Mc-Knights favored Blenweed finished fourth. It was another fine day for racing and 15,115 patrons turned out. The Cranberry was run over the six-furlong distance and the winners time, 1:11, was one of the fastest races at the meeting. Nell A. had started twice previously this season and, while she showed flashes of speed against a better grade of competition, she was slightly overlooked in the wagering, returning 3.80. Bred for Speed Nell A., bred for speed, being a five-year-old daughter of Tiger Wise Daughter, broke well with her field, but lacked the early foot to keep pace with the leaders and promptly dropped back. While Petrin was steadying her along, Myshirley stepped along at a brisk clip to open daylight on her rivals. Tim B., Ogham and Cee Style formed the second flight and they remained virtually in that position until well into the final turn. Myshirley increased the tempo and opened a pair of lengths and appeared to have everything her own way. The others were driving in back of her and none seemed capable of reaching her until Nell A. began her move. Myshirley appeared to quit cold at the eighth pole, however, and Ogham gained command with Tim B. right on his heels. But Nell A. continued determinedly on the inside rail and she added speed as the finish neared, gained command and then drew off. Tralle and McBrides Green Haven ran right back to his recent fine effort, when he beat a field of juveniles in the second. The victory, however, was marked by a touch of luck, for D. Djordjadzes Mogador was probably pounds the best as the race was run. The latter was taken up sharply after breaking in front and seemed practically out of it at the head of the stretch, where he was almost 10 lengths back. But he recovered his stride and passed all but the winner as if they were tied, to finish second. Mogador was a warm paddock tip and is nominated for stakes at Narragan-sett Park. He is a particularly striking colt and those who watched his courageous run tabbed him as a youngster of fine quality. River Boyne finished third in the five-furlong dash and the winning time was 1:00.
