►~ — " Nine to Oppose Rippey Today In 5,000 Roseben Handicap * He/is Speedster Shoulders 732 as He Engages Buzfuz, Pipette, Up Beat and Istan BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 31. — Ten of the fleetest sprinters in training in this area were named overnight for the tenth running of the Roseben Handicap. This six-furlong dash down the Widener Course is the sixth of the eight-race program and carries an added value of 5,000 of which, should all start, the winning owner will collect a purse of 1,200. The Roseben is named for the fleet speedster who carried the racing silks of the late David C. "Davy" Johnson some 40 years back. Johnson was one of the colorful characters of American racing in that era and Roseben was regarded as one of the fastest horses ever to wear irons. His weight carrying ability is, despite the records, becoming a legend on the turf. Roseben won the first renewa , of the Toboggan Handicap at Belmont Park and when that fixture, which was inaugurated in 1890 at Morris Park, was transferred to the Westchester Association. The Roseben prior to 1942 was contested over the main track. Arcaro to Ride Rippey, racing for .William Helis is the topweight tomorrow and this six-year-old has 132 pounds as his assignment. Jockey Eddie Arcaro will guide him. Rippey is asked to concede from 12 to 30 pounds to his opposition and this shapes up as a formidable task. His last start was in the Metropolitan Handicap when he carried 125 in that mile distance, but could do no better than finish sixth. The eight furlongs appeared beyond his ability. However, prior to that, he picked up 129 pounds and blazed a fast six furlongs down the Widener Course to win the Toboggan Handicap. In that offering he cleverly trounced some of those that he will meet tomorrow, namely Buzfuz, Pinebloom, Pipette, King Rhymer and Up Beat. In the weight assignments tomorrow he picks up three pounds while Buzfuz sheds one, Pinebloom has five less, King Rhymer one less and Pipette and Up Beat remain the same. On the strength of his Toboggan showing he appears to hold this lot safe. Macbeth, who races for J. M. Roebling, turned in a smart effort at Garden State several weeks back, being whipped a matter of inches by the smart Ocean Brief from the King Ranch. However, the filly was conceding scale and actual weight to the Roebling color-bearer and the 115 -pound impost appears to hold this fellow safe. Istan is a smart performer under the Brookfield Farm colors and this fellow has to his credit some fine efforts this year. He won his last at Pimlico. Yankee Hill, the reliance of the Sanford Fann, was last seen under colors in a mile classified event in which he finished fourth to Three Rings, Contest and Danada Gift. However, in that test he was eliminated to a certain extent when the starting gates were thrown open. He reared and was away slowly. He was then rushed up on the inside to encounter trouble at the far turn. That race can be disregarded. Pennant Day has a world of early speed and under his feathery impost could be a factor. ,
