— Safe Arrival Takes Honors at Belmont King Ranch Colt Recovers From Poor Start to Defeat Nathaniel and High Trend BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 31. — Safe Arrival, the four-year-old in the King Ranch menage, raced to expectations in the Cravat Classified Handicap, the featured offering today. The colt was much the best of his company for in addition to stumbling at the start he was forced to circle the leaders at the stretch turn, losing ground. These misfortunes, as a rule, exact considerable from a starter, but when placed under pressure in the stretch run, the son of Eight Thirty and Too Timely responded in courageous fashion. At the finish he held one length before Nathaniel from the Lazy F Ranch while in third place four and one-half lengths back was High Trend. Inseparable was fourth as Respingo finished last to round out the field. The winner, under jockey Dave Gorman, was the popular choice of the quintet and he returned a .00 mutuel. The early pace was fast and the winner turned the mile distance in 1:36%, a good effort. The -let-down from the exciting weekend, Saturday and Memorial Day was evidenced this .afternoon. Clear skies and higher temperature readings prevailed. The admittance department reported that 17.-548 passed the turnstiles. Prefect Withdrawn Six were named overnight for the Cravat which carried a purse value of ,000, but Prefect was withdrawn, leaving Respingo to carry the load for the Gustav Ring stable. The latter was unequal to the occasion. He was kept forwardly from the start only to flatten out when urged. When the favorite stumbled at the start, jockey Gorman permitted him to resettle into stride in a leisurely fashion. Safe Arrival, four lengths back of Respingo, High Trend and Nathaniel, followed the fast early pace and it was not until the far turn that he began to improve his position. He then moved up fast and at the stretch turn while on the extreme outside appeared lapped on the leaders. At this stage Respingo began to falter and drop back while High Trend and Nathaniel were showing signs of the fast early pace. Gorman roused Safe Arrival in determined fashion and inside the final furlong marker the King Ranch colt had surged into command to increase his margin steadily thereafter. Nathaniel had no trouble in saving the place while the tiring High Trend easily held Inseparable for the minor portion of the prize.
