► . Ten Probable Starters Listed For Yankee Renewal Saturday Ocean Drive and Swap Out Expected to Be Shipped In For 5,000 Suffolk Test SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 31. — With only five days remaining before the fourteenth running of the 5,000 Yankee Handicap, eight commitments have been established through the office of John P. Turner, Sr., racing secretary of Suffolk Downs. Barring unforeseen incidents, those being definitely pointed for the week-end event are Mort Stuarts Best Doings, Wood-vale Farms Halt, Marlet Stables Sneak, Frances Stables Engel Man, Murray Hill Farms Boo Boo Shoo, L. W. Johnsons Var, William G. Helis Benvenuto and Beverly Brouns Magna Charta. In addition to the above group, there is a good possibility that Fred Hoopers Ocean Drive and King Ranchs Swap Out will be sent here from New York. Assuming that the 10 mentioned above start in the Yankee on Saturday the line-up will consist of six invaders against four for the home team. Best Doings, Boo Boo Shoo, Var and Sneak will represent the local talent. Not since Brandons. Farms Pass Out won the Yankee in 1940 has a locally campaigned sophomore won the honors in the top three-year-old stake of the New England circuit. Subsequent winners have been Woodvale Farms Our Boots, Greentree Stables Shut Out, L. B. Mayers Whirlabout, C. S. Howards Sea Swallow, Mrs. A. Wichfelds Cable, Deering Howes Donor and King Ranchs Better Self. The Yankee was not run in 1943. Purchased for 0,000 as Juvenile Best Doings, a son of Best Seller — Big Doings, was purchased for a reported 0,-000 as a two-year-old by Stuart, a Boston business man. Turned over to trainer Mark Harris, the colt has easily distinguished himself as the top three-year-old to perform at the East Boston track this spring. Last Saturday, Best Doings galloped to victory in the Constitution Handicap over a heavy racing strip and earned ,025 to boost his years total to 6,600. In 10 starts this year, Best Doings has compiled a rec- ord of four victories and five seconds. Turner rated Best Doings 10 pounds below the topweighted Capot who was assigned 128 for the Yankee. Halt is the most illustrious of the definite starters. The homebred son of Halter — After All began his sophomore year with a triumph in an overnight allowance sprint at Keeneland this past spring. After showing a good effort in a six and one-half furlongs test at Keeneland in which he finished third to Ky. Colonel and Petey Cotter, Halt won the Blue Grass Stakes. In that race, which was at nine furlongs, the Woodvale colt defeated Johns Joy, Wine List and Old Rockport. Rated a lukewarm chance in this years Kentucky Derby, Halt, because of his usual slow beginning, failed to get going until too late in the large field, finishing fifth. Passing up the Preakness, Halt was next seen under silks in the recent Withers Stakes at Belmont, but failed to impress, while finishing fifth in a six-horse field. Since that race, Woody Stephens has been getting satisfactory trials from his charge. The most recent workout of Halt was at Belmont Park this past week-end, where he negotiated nine furlongs in 1:53. Word was received here this morning that Halt will arrive during the afternoon. Halt gets in the Yankee very nicely under a 113-pound impost.
