EUGENE JACOBS— Owner and trainer of Colonel Mike, Shevlin winner. Colonel Colonel Mike Mike Victorious Victorious in in Shevlin; Shevlin; Frere Frere Jacques Jacques Driving Driving Turf Turf Winner Winner Staves Off Closing Rush of One Hitter Arcaro Drives Jacobs Co!t Home Neck to Good in Role Of Favorite at Aqueduct AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 15.— Eugene Jacobs Colonel Mike drive to a popular triumph in the 22d running of the Shevlin Stakes at Aqueduct today, staving off the closing rush of Greentree Stables One Hitter, to score by a neck. Brookmeade Stables Blue Hills was two lengths behind the embattled leaders at the end of the mile and a sixteenth, with F. A. Blasers Count-A-Bit- daylight out of the money at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. Smoothly ridden by Eddie Arcaro, Colonel Mike returned .20 to his innumerable followers in the crowd of 19,048 patrons, who turned out in pleasantly breezy weather. Colonel Mike was timed a creditable 1:48% over the deeply cushioned track. Epic and Blue Lancer alternated in cutting out a fast pace, getting the half in :48% and six furlongs in 1:13 Vs. One Hitter stumbled and almost unseated Ted Atkinson at the start, which may have been almost enough to cost him the victory. Though he always comes from behind, One Hitter would probably not have been in seventh place when he started to make his move above the three-eighths pole and might have had fewer horses to go around at the head of the stretch. Epic Sent to Front Quickly Chris Rogers sent Epic to the front as the Shevlin field swept past the stands the first time, closely followed by Blue Lancer, as the pair opened up a lead of several lengths over Ourquest, Count-A-Bit, Blue Hills, Danherst, Halt, One Hitter and Colonel Mike. Epic and Blue Lancer continued to lead in the run down the backstretch, while Colonel Mike began to move up rapidly, being in fourth place at the far turn, preceded by Epic, Blue Lancer and Count-A-Bit and running freely. At this stage, One Hitter had only Danherst and Halt behind him and found his way blocked along the rail. Colonel Mike took command at the head of the stretch as the pacemakers ran out of wind. The favorite, Blue Hills, Epic and Blue Lancer, who was stopping, were spread across the track at the quarter pole, with One Hitter surging up fast on the extreme outside. In a few strides, Colonel Mike had drawn away from his immediate followers, but One Hitter came on with a furious rush that appeared likely to prevail at the 70-yard pole. Colonel Mike and Arcaro had a little left, however, and held the Greentree colt safe in the final yards. Colonel Mike, who added 5,650 to his earnings, was scoring his fifth victory in Continued on Page Two Colonel Mike Drives Hard To Popular Shevlin Score Continued from Page One 15 starts this year, and had been in the money in eight others. In his next to last start, he was rather unluckily beaten by Ponder, the Derby winner, in the Peter Pan Handicap at Belmont Park. Last Saturday, he finished second to Greentrees Wine List in the Kent Stakes at Delaware, appearing sore after the race. He was sound enough today.
