Run Historic Ascot Gold Cup Today Black Tarquin Is Hope of America Woodward Colt Meets Arch Foe, Alycidon, at 2Yi Miles; Coronation Stakes to Avila By VERNON MORGAN Reuters Sports Editor ASCOT, England, June 15.— Ascots royal meeting will reach its climax tomorrow with the running of the Gold Cup, most discussed race in many seasons. The 0,000 event, to be run over two and a half miles, has attracted a galaxy of international talent, including William Woodwards American-bred Black Tarquin. The last three gold cups have gone to France, whose sole challenger this time is Turmoil. Ireland has sent over Iron Bridge, while the homebred contingent is headed by Lord Derbys fine stayer, Alycidon. In spite of the strength of the entries, the issue appears to rest between Black Tarquin and Alycidon, first and second in last years St. Leger, and a great duel is expected between these two fine colts. Both have improved records since, and opinions are sharply divided about their respective chances. Black Tarquin swept past his rivals in the St. Leger, but excuses were advanced for Alycidon, who had to make his own running at a vital stage. Later on in the year, over the two miles of tomorrows Gold Cup course, Alycidon, paced by a stablemate, defeated four crack French stayers to win the King George VI. Stakes. Tomorrow, Lord Derby will have two pacemakers to insure Alycidon, son of the Italian sire, Donatello, will not dawdle. Trio to Carry Lord Derbys Colors Seldom before has one crack horse had two companions to set a pace. It is estimated Lord Derbys effort to try and make certain his winning of the coveted trophy will cost him about 00 per minute for about four minutes while the race is being run. The cost of running a horse in the race is 00. The race will recall memories of the great 1936 race when Woodward came near carrying off the Gold Cup with the American-bred Omaha. In a magnificent finish Omaha was beaten by the late Lord Stanleys filly, Quashed. Black Tarquin has had a strenuous preparation for tomorrows test, dating back to last winter. It is reported he has been consistently covering about 10 miles a day in gallops, canters and evening walks. One. doubt is liis ability to get the distance. His longest race so far has been over one mile and seven furlongs, but he possesses a devastating turn of speed. Ascot was made truly royal this afternoon by the victory of the Kings filly, Avila, in the Coronation Stakes, for three-year-bid fillies, run over one mile. This was the first win of the present reigning monarch at a Royal Ascot meeting. The King, Queen and members of the Royal family saw Avila race to a comfortable three-length victory. Avila started 11 to 2 on the books, but so popular was her success that she returned only 3 to. 1 in the "tote." Half a furlong from the finish, when it was obvious Avila would win, loud cheers broke out and, as is the custom in Britain, men took off their hats, shouting, "Hats off to the King."
