Larry Ellis, Spats Vie In Suffolks Wollasron Will Be Ridden, by Madden and Keene, Respectively, Today SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 26.--Mrs. J. M. Lingles Larry Ellis, a versatile son of Easy Moh, and Mrs. G. Robertsons Spats, a consistent sprinting mare, meet in the - featured six furlong Wollastbn Purse here tomorrow and divided interest seems likely. Larry Ellis will be handled by jockey Darrel Madden, while his rival will have the services of Harold "Red" Keene, currently" leading the local riding colony. Also listed to start in the feature are Ralph Lowes Regal, Felix M. Poncelets Exemplar, George E. Babins Equihaze, White Orchid Stables Old Tom and C. R. Millers Dogs Up. Larry Ellis won a sprint earlier in the meeting, defeating the fleet Duke Aumar but since that race has bowed to Charleston at six furlongs and Abstract at a mile and a sixteenth. Keene has been the regular rider of the Lingle gelding in his four local starts this spring, besides having been up on Spats in her fivestarts in New England. The fact that he is familiar with the performances of each of the two rivals may have some bearing on the outcome of tomorrows test. Larry Ellis is the type of thoroughbred who makes one-run through the stretch and there are some patrons who believe Keene had made that move too early. Madden is the type of rider who will wait and has been successful on many local thoroughbreds where others have failed. It will be interesting to note the effect of the change in riders. Spats is a speedy mare who likes to run with the leaders and is blessed with the stamina to stay when the pressure is on. Old Tom and Equihaze, a pair of fainthearted sprinters, appear suited for the role of pacemakers in the Wollaston, so the race should be made to order for the best qualities of Larry Ellis and Spats. Exemplar has started twice at the local meeting and on each occasion was returned an impressive winner. His initial race here this season was against claimers of the ,500 class and he was elevated to the allowance company last week and registered in 1:11 over In Taste and Mestiza. Off that effort, the son of Hoop, Jr., rates a chance to extend the top ones in the Wollaston.
