Fifteen Fifteen in in Warren Warren Wright Wright Memorial; Memorial; County County Delight Delight Tops Tops Edgemere Edgemere Field Field Carries 126, Giving Rivals Much Weight Queens County Winner Has Arise, Greek Ship, Alerted And To Market to Defeat By EVAN SHIPMAN AQUEDUCT, L. I., N. Y., June 20.— The Edgemere Handicap attracted a field of 11 overnight entrants for its thirty-third running as the feature of tomorrows Aqueduct program. The Edgemere is over the mile and a furlong distance and a stepping stone to the more glamorous and richer r endowed Brooklyn Handicap to be contested three weeks hence. County Delight, from the Rokeby Stable of Paul Mellon of Pittsburgh, Pa., is the top weight with 126 pounds and next to him in the estimation of racing secretary John B. Campbell are Greek Ship from the Brookmeade Stable of Mrs. Dodge Sloane and Arise from the Addison Stable of Jack Addison of Toronto. They are to carry 121 pounds each. To Market, recently acquired by the King Ranch from Sam A. Mason n., will carry 119 pounds. The others in the field are Nullify from Phantom Farms, Lazy F Ranchs Out Point, Belair Studs Golden Gloves, William Ewings Auditing, Gustave Rings Lone Eagle, Hampton Stables Alerted and C. V. Whitneys Mameluke. Will Gross 8,925 If All Start This is a representative field from the B original list of 47 nominations who were e made eligible when the stake closed on i May 15. The Edgemere carries an added value of 5,000 and should all 11 go it will i net the winner 9,650 from the gross purse e of 8,925. The start of the race is effected I in front of the grandstand and in this respect post positions do not play too important a factor for there is a fairly long I run to the first turn, something like three-sixteenths of a mile. County Delight will no doubt rule the e favorite on the strength of his Queens s County Handicap success. The latter lost ground at the sharp first turn but then when it came to the real issue did not close with the zip that he displayed at Belmont Park. In this winning effort, over shifty band of middle-distance performers that included, Northern Star, War King, Uncle Miltie, Nullify and To Market, he forced the early pace and then drew : away emphatically at the end. Arise was making his seasonal debut over : the local strip and it is quite possible that ; he did not relish the change from the • Nassau County course. However, he is ■ bound to improve. Trainer Preston Burch, ; master of forethought when it comes to readying a candidate for a stake offering, . vanned Greek Ship and War King over from Belmont to get the feel of the track. ! They worked together and turned in a J creditable five furlong stine in 1:00 and a , few fractions. Greek Ship in his trial, , showed a liking for the local footing and ] negotiated the sharp far turn with ease. Ronnie Nash is scheduled to ride this colt and he is fully aware of his actions and - mannerisms. , Greek Ship has not started since the ] Metropolitan at Belmont, a month back, but in that race saved much ground and i had no mishaps. Mameluke, with 117 as ] his burden, proved a surprise winner of that race. Mameluke came back to finish ] third in the Suburban, beating Alerted 1 among others. He was then shipped to 1 Suffolk Downs for the Massachusetts Han- I dicap in which To Market set a track record and turned in one of the best efforts I his career. ] To Market, a champion as a juvenile I around Chicago and a swift going one in ■ out-of-town engagements, his Massachu- I setts score is a pronounced attestation, has yet to win a race on a New York track, i Max Hirsch has always said of this fellow ■ when he is in a running mood that he is ocapable of whipping any horse he meets. • Golden Gloves, who took down the Shev- J and trains over this strip, is the co- i lightweight of the field, with 102. Nullify t carries the same impost. All in all, the field is well balanced and the early pace i it fast or slow, will be the factor that r will in the long run, decide the outcome.
