Name Eight-Horse Field for Puritan Simms, Little Step Likely To Renew Their Rivalr/ of Recent Tomasello Running By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 20. — The fourteenth running of the ,000 added Puritan Handicap features the week-end program here tomorrow and eight of the best middle distance handicap stars of the local contingent are slated to match strides. The mile and 70 yards event lost some of its lustre when Phil Schwartz* Charleston, original top weight at 119 pounds was declared. The son of Some Chance has developed a curb and the Connecticut owner-trainer plans to fire the stakes winner. Tommy Mays Whirling Bat will go post-ward as the topweight of the well balanced field with an impost of 111 pounds, one more than assigned to T. W. Smiths Simms and Little Step, who races in the partnership of Purtiment, Caval and Chmura. W. L. Huntleys Dateline at 109 will run coupled with Mrs. K. Huntleys Whirling Dough, who carries 106 pounds. Mrs. E. Brunos Amphiblem at 105, Anthony Cataldos War Token, 104 and Mrs. G. Robertsons Spats, 103 complete the field for the Puritan. - Simms and Little Step, starters in the recent edition of the Massachusetts Handicap, are rigged in such a manner for tomorrows feature that the pair could easily renew their feud of the Tomasello Memorial Handicap. In that race, Simms gained a nose decision while getting a two-pound concession in the weights. Marshall Wilder, who rode Simms in his lone stake triumph, and Darrell Madden, the rider of Little Step on that memorable afternoon have again been engaged to handle their respective horses. Although neither were serious factors in the mile and a quarter Massachusetts Handicap, the conditions of tomorrows race should fit them well enough to have the Saturday crowd on edge during the anticiapted stretch duel. Dateline Beaten Narrowly by Tilenny Dateline was a participant in the Memorial Day race and although soundly beaten by the top pair, came back a week later to miss beating Tilenny by a nose at a mile and a sixteenth. Earlier in the meeting, Dateline decisioned Simms by a neck to account for the Faneuil Hall Handicap. The five-year-old son of Domingo will have the services of Evan Jenkins in tomorrows test. Dateline will have a competent stable-mate in Whirling Dough in the Puritan. The son of Whirlaway served notice on the local handicap division in his last race although he was beaten at the wire by Fighting Back. Harold Keene, who rode Whirling Dough in that race, will again be in the saddle and the improvement expected tomorrow may be enough to cause a mild upset. Whirling Bat has failed to run to his early sophomore form over the local oval, but the Whirlaway-Night Shadow colt can not be overlooked in this field. He has been corrected of his habit of running out through the stretch and if in a running mood tomorrow, the top choices better be at their best. Spats has been successful against some of the best sprinters on the grounds and only in her last start was she tried over a distance of ground. In that race, the game mare carried her speed well into the stretch before succumbing to the late charge of Larry Ellis, Fighting Back and Tilenny. Her feathery impost in the Puritan plus having the services of apprentice Tony DeSpirito, who has proven his ability of rating horses over the middle distance races, makes Spats a formidable opponent. War Token has beaten cheaper but has his work cut out for him in the Puritan. Amphiblen has failed to impress in either of his two local starts and must be considered an outsider in the field.
