J., June 20. — C. V. Whitneys Common Cause came down from New York for the featured New Jersey Press Association Purse and came out on top at the end of the mile and a sixteenth. He was a half length be-20 rore J. M. Roeblings Freedom Bell, another invader, while the odds-on Scobeyville, from W. H. Foales Stable, finished third after leading for almost the entire trip. It was a triumph for the New York horses. Logan Batcheller was astride the Whit-60 ney colorbearer and the victory was worth 3.20 to those in the crowd of 9,500 that backed the horse. It was a nice day, at least in the weather department, but only two favorites won through the feature. Time for the mile and a sixteenth was l:47y5. Scobeyville was quoted at 3 to 5 to win his third straight race, since he scored with ease in two previous sprints. This was his first essay over a distance and he was hustled to the front soon after the start and opened up a long lead. But when they hit the head of the stretch he started getting late badly and, when the real drive came, he had nothing left to repulse the bids of Common Cause and Freedom Bell. The Whitney horse had him on the outside and Roeblings racer came through on the rail, and both passed him in a couple of steps. Common Cause outgamed Freedom Bell for the major portion of the purse. Common Cause was reserved off the early pace and came from far back when the time was ripe, as did Freedom Bell. Scobeyville went the half in :47% and the six furlongs in l:124/5 and, although put under the whip in the stretch, faltered with every step. Common Cause, a Mahmoud — Burning Bright colt, was bred by his owner, and was winning his second start in eight races. His only other score came in a maiden affair at Santa Anita this past March.
