Snead Eliminated in PGA Tourney Defending Champ " J Loses to Worsham Harrison and Little Also Among Favorites Sidelined In First Round Match Play By OSCAR FRALEY United Press Sports Writer LOUISVILLE, Ky., June 20.— Jut-jawed i Lew Worsham of Oakmont, Pa., kept the , golfing whammy on Sam Snead when he ; knocked the defending champion from [ White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., out of the J PGA championship today with a 19th hole - triumph in the first round of match play. Worsham, who defeated Snead in a 1947 j play-off for the U. S. Open championship, roared back from a one down deficit to square the match on the 17th and then blasted out a birdie four on the 19th to knock Snead out of the tournament. Snead was the second favorite to go, with i slightly more than half of the first round 1 matches finished, skidding out on the heels s of medalist Dutch Harrison of Ardmore, , Okla., beaten by Marty Purgol of Atlanta, , 2 up. Both Snead and Worsham were out in i three under par 33 s in the first of todays s two 18 -hole rounds which cut the field of t 64 to 16 by nightfall. That put them even 1 at the turn and Snead twice went one up, only to have Worsham fight back even on 1 the 17th as each came home in 38 for 71s. • On the 19th, Worsham reached the green 1 of the 529-yard par five hole in two steady shots. Snead was in a trap to the right of * the green with his second. Snead blasted 1 out 12 feet from the flag and Worsham | putted up to within four feet. Snead missed 1 his putt and Worsham dropped his to win 1 the match. Little Loses to Kroll Lawson Little, former National Open J champion from Pebble Beach, Calif., was J the third name player to join Snead and 1 Harrison on the sidelines as he lost to 5 Ted Kroll of New Hartford, N. Y., 1 down. -! J Kroll, one of the new crop of tournament stars, held off a comeback by Little to best t the former champion. He was out in 34 1 for a three-up lead on Littles 37. Little e won the 13th and 16th holes with pars, but t couldnt catch Kroll, as they halved the e 17th and 18th with pars. Veteran Zell Eaton of Montebello, Calif., joined the advance to the second round j with a 2 and 1 win over Mike Pavella of f Washington, Pa. Earlier, former National 1 Open king Lloyd Mangrum of Chicago was s the first man into the second round with 1 an easy 4 and 3 win over Frank Newell of f Tacoma, Wash. Mangrum built his margin ! with an out 32 against a 36. Mangrum was never down in the match, taking the lead on the second hole with a birdie after they halved the opener with 1 pars. Newell evened the match on the third j with a birdie, but Mangrum took the next t three in a row with two birds and an eagle 2 to compile his winning margin. , Dr. Cary Middlecoff, the Memphis dentist, . playing in his first PGA, made a strong y start in the first round with a 5 and 4 victory I over Joe Taylor of Bristol, Tenn. Middlecoff started with a two under par r 34, which put him three up at the turn on Taylors 37. The slender Cary then won 3 the 11th with a par and the 13th with a birdie, halving the 14th with a par, to close e out the match. Big Jim Ferrier, the 1947 champion from a San Francisco, battled back from a three e down deficit to win out over Leonard Dod-son . of Mission, Kan., on the 19th. Ferrier had an out 39 against Dodsons two under par 34. He won the 10th, but again went t three down on the 12th against Dodsons s birdie. But Big Jim hammered back to win * the 13th and 14th with steady pars, squared 3 the match, and then, on the 529-yard par r five 19th, blasted two long wood snots to 0 the green and two-putted for a winning s birdie.
